Antarctic Ocean CreatureScientists investigating the icy waters of Antarctic said on Tuesday they collected mysterious creatures including giant sea spiders and huge worms from the murky depths. Australian experts taking part in an international program to take a census of marine life in the southern ocean collected specimens from up to 6,500 feet beneath the surface. Some of the animals far under the sea grow to unusually large sizes, a phenomenon called "gigantism" that scientists still don't fully understand. Voyage leader Dr. Martin Riddle said during twenty days of actual sampling, they collected many samples of marine life, up to twenty-five percent of them previously unknown. We saw giant worms, giant crustaceans, giant sea spiders, glass-like tunicates, enormously diverse areas in some places, in other places things scraped bare and barren by iceberg/ scour. So huge diversity of life, very colorful, very rich, far exceeding any of our expectations. Among the bizarre looking creatures the scientists spotted, was a species of tunicates, plankton-eating animals that resemble slender glass structures up to three feet tall, other animals were equally baffling. They had, they had fins in various places. They had funny dangly bits around their mouths. They, most of all we were working on the bottom, so they were all bottom dwellers. So they were all evolved in different ways to live, to hang on the seabed in the dark, so many of them had very large eyes, so that what they are gonna use them for there where there's no life? I couldn't tell you. But yeah, they are very strange-looking fish. The specimens have been sent to universities and museums around the world for identification, tissue sampling and DNA studies. The expedition was part of an ambitious international effort to map life forms in the Antarctic Ocean, also known as the "Southern Ocean''. Scientists are studying the impact of climate change and monitoring how increased ocean acidification affects coral gardens. Increased acidification will make it harder for marine organisms to grow and sustain calcium carbonate skeletons. Scientists are planning a follow-up expedition in ten years to examine the effects of climate changes on the environment.200810/52232

But this hasn't always been so. Over the last 15 million years, Africa's climate has repeatedly swung from wet to dry and back again as Ice Ages have come and gone. At times the Kalahari has been much drier than it is today, its sands stretching as far as the equator, linking it with the largest desert in the world--the Sahara. Covering 9 million square kilometers , the Sahara is so vast, the whole of Australia could comfortably fit into it. It is bleak, inhospitable, and compared to Southern Africa's deserts, very new. Few animals have had time to get to grips with this mighty wilderness, a place where only the hardiest can get by. Scimitar-horned oryx are true desert nomads , wandering for hundreds of miles across the Sahara in search of sparse shrubs. They've lived long enough in other dry regions of Africa to tackle the hardships of this fierce young desert. Oryx are unusual among antelopes in that females have horns as long as males. They use these formidable weapons to aggressively deter outsiders from joining their group, especially, when food is limited. Scimitar-horned oryx are among a handful of tough African mammals able to cope with the Sahara. The Ghost In Your Genes(基因外遗传现象) 01We are on the brink of uncovering a hidden world, a world that connects past and future generations in ways we never imagined possible. What this means is an environmental exposure that your grandmother had could cause a disease in you even though you've never been exposed to the toxin. And you are gonna pass it onto your great-grand kids. These extraordinary discoveries have the potential to affect every aspect of our lives. It's not just the genes, but also the environment in the early life of your ancestors. It's not so much you're what you eat as something you are what your mother ate, and maybe you are what your grandmother ate. And if you take our data, you're what's stress your grandmother or grandfather had. It would change the way we think about our relationship with every generation. (it) Makes me feel closer to my children. What I experienced, in terms of environment will have some type of legacy in my children and my grandchildren. "And he chose to take a political path that helped him get the nomination of his party. I took a path [in backing the surge] that I knew was unpopular, because I knew we had to win in Iraq. And we are winning in Iraq. And if we had done what Senator Obama wanted done, it would have been chaos, genocide, increased Iranian influence, and perhaps al-Qaida establishing a base again [in Iraq]." For Obama, the important question is not whether the surge was a good idea, but how best to deploy America's limited military and financial resources going forward, given what he considers an ill-advised U.S. decision to invade Iraq in 2003. The senator spoke on N's Meet The Press program. There is no doubt, and I have said this repeatedly, that our troops [in Iraq] make a difference," said Barack Obama. "My job as the next commander-in-chief is going to be [to] make a decision: what is the right war to fight and how do we fight it? And I think we should have been focused on Afghanistan from the start. We should have finished that job. We have not. But we now have the opportunity, moving forward, to begin a phased redeployment [from Iraq] and make sure we are finishing the job in Afghanistan." U.S. public opinion surveys show a tight race between the two presidential contenders, with most Americans rating economic issues as their top concerns. 200807/44981。

Institution Meets Institution. It's destined to be the ultimate get-together. Following her Oscar for her portrayal of Elizabeth Windsor, Helen Mirren is like to receive an invite from Buckingham Palace to meet the Queen herself. She is the first Briton in 15 years to win a Best Actress Oscar, but predictions that Peter Morgan's film would sweep the board in Los Angeles proved unfounded. There were awards for the actor Forest Whitaker and veteran director Martin Scorsese, but once again Peter O Toole left the ceremony for the 8th time empty-handed. Here is our Oscar correspondent Nicholas Glass. The nominees for this year's Academy Award... They kicked things off for a change all the Oscar nominees were invited to stand. A record 177 of them this year. This year was so predictable it bordered on the dreary. But a good year, nevertheless, for one of the older guys, the movie brats of the 70s recognizing one of their own.And the Oscar goes to Martin Scorsese, the 64 little Martin was finally getting his due, 6th time lucky, standing ovation, an enormous audible whistle from Jack. Could, could you double check the envelope? So many people over the years have been wishing this for me, so, it's strange. You know, I go, I went to walk in the street, people would say something to me I'm gonna doctor's office I'm gonna, whatever, elevators. People say:" I wish you, should win it, should win it!" I go for X rays,"you should win one" and I'm saying Thank You.The Departed also took Best Picture, it's not vintage Scorsese. The Academy habitually overlooks the director's best work, though this movie is bloody and entertaining, must have taken more money than any movie he's ever made. Grand King once have called Fosters and the son of a London cabby, produced it. Judi Dench who has a new operation was notable by her absence. But then Helen Mirren has regally swept over for her. According to our account, this was her 25th award for The Queen. Now you know for 50 years and more, Elizabeth Windsor has maintained her dignity, her sense of duty and her hairstyle. And I salute her courage and her consistency and I thank her because for her, if it wasn't for her, I most, most certainly would not be here. Ladies and gentlemen, I give you The Queen.Oh, you are beauty. Peter Morgan, who wrote the Queen, also helped give life to another Oscar winning impersonation. Forest Whitaker took Best Actor for his terrifying embodiment of Idi Amin in The Last King of Scotland. It is possible for a kid from East Texas, raised in south central LA and Karlson, who believes in his dreams, commits himself to them with his heart, to touch them and to have them happen. One curious addition to preceding this year, a special camera backstage. So winners could keep on thanking anyone and everyone. Thank you for hiring me. Umum...who else.Barbie still help me, my accent.Special thanks to S, every single day, great that he was there.I forgot to thank Hidi. So Hidi, when you see this ,I'm so sorry.Oh I'd like to thank, did I say God, Yes God, oh, I should thank. Come on, somebody help me.Oh how goodness poultry would have loved, thank you Kam.Um, and just many other people, my agents, um, my lawyer for making a good deal. Well. not so good, but never mind.Don't worry, darling, you'll get your much better deal next time. An invitation to tear in Buckingham Palace is apparently in the offing.----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------1.standing ovation:If a speaker or performer gets a standing ovation when they have finished speaking or performing, the audience stands up to clap in order to show its admiration or support.2.in the offing:即将发生的200805/39575

US Aircraft Carrier Kitty Hawk Makes Last Port Call小鹰号航母停靠香港象征意义重大 The Kitty Hawk is making its first visit to Hong Kong since Beijing refused to let the U.S. aircraft carrier drop anchor in the city last year. It is the last port call here for America's oldest active warship before it will be decommissioned. Thousands of casually dressed sailors left the U.S. aircraft carrier Kitty Hawk on Monday, y for a few days of rest and recreation in Hong Kong. The last time the warship tried to enter the city, in November, the crew had to stay on board. Unexpectedly, Beijing refused to allow the Kitty Hawk to stop in Hong Kong, disappointing hundreds of relatives who had flown there to celebrate the U.S. Thanksgiving holiday with crew members. The move caused a diplomatic spat between the ed States and China. Rear Admiral Richard Wren said on board the Kitty Hawk on Monday that Beijing never gave a satisfactory explanation for the incident. But he says things are back on track now. It's normal. I would say we are status quo," Admiral Wren said. "And I would think other than that one little hiccup with Kitty Hawk - if you look at the history of the past few years and then if you watch what happens in the next year - you know it's still in planning - I think you kind of go - well, it's just a little blip!" Other U.S. war ships have aly visited Hong Kong this year, including the carrier the Nimitz and the command ship Blue Ridge. On average, 40 U.S. navy vessels make port call in Hong Kong each year, and the sailors spend millions of dollars in stores, hotels, restaurants and bars. The Kitty Hawk is on its normal spring cruise schedule. But Wren says the U.S. navy also is there to closely watch what is going on in the Taiwan Strait - in the crucial time before the inauguration of Taiwan's newly elected President Ma Ying-jeou on May 20. Hong Kong is expected to be the last port call in Asia for the 47-year-old Kitty Hawk, America's oldest active warship. At the end of May, the ed States' last conventionally powered aircraft carrier will be replaced by the George Washington, a nuclear-powered carrier. Like the Kitty Hawk, its home base will be Yokosuka in Japan, the home of the ed States' Seventh Fleet. Wren says it is the first time that a nuclear-powered aircraft carrier will be deployed in Japan. We are determined to continue to support stability in this region so by bringing forward the most significant asset, the best asset that we can bring today and that's USS George Washington," he said. The decision to base the George Washington in Japan raised some opposition among the Japanese public. The country, which is the only nation to have experienced a nuclear attack, when the U.S. dropped atomic bombs on it to end World War II, has a policy of opposing the use of nuclear weapons. The Kitty Hawk will be brought back to the ed States later this year where it will be deactivated. 200804/36951
