The Great Mortgage Disappearing ActFirst Direct, which was the most competitive lender on the market, has stopped offering mortgages to new customers. As Sky's Business Correspondent Joel Hills reports, it is not the only lender pulling mortgage deals. It's the great mortgage disappearing act and it's happening online and on the high street. First Direct is not the first, but it's the most high-profile lender to close itself to new business all together. The bank which is owned by HS says the move is temporary,it's not had any trouble,it's simply been swamped by mortgage applications. It's little wonder there is a mortgage rush on these cheap deals that're becoming harder to find.Last summer,we had the luxury of 15,500 mortgages to choose from, one credit crunch later, and today there are less than one third of that number. In the last week alone,906 mortgages have been pulled by lenders,as are rated just under 200 deals everyday. This one is from Chuck Riocosta, who rates up yesterday. A court, again, same thing yesterday.Glen Morris is a mortgage broker,he tells me he's getting daily e-mails from lenders, hiking rates and withdrawing products. After years of plenty, they've suddently become picky.I believe there's only 100% product left, and we are expecting news of that to go anytime now, even a 95% loan-to-value mortgage now is tough to find.So people without a deposit are gonna find it very difficult in this market, also people with credit problems. The frustration for first-time buyers like Lian Jacab is that house prices are falling at a time when mortgages are getting more expensive, the trainee accountant still finds herself priced out."Plans for the future ,carry on saving, stay at home with Mom and Dad for a little bit longer."And tonight, another lender is pulling yet another cheap deal. The Cooperative has suspended its two-year mortgages due to excessive demand-- a sign that this vanishing act is beginning to unsettle borrowers. The German economy is highly dependent on exports. But recent data suggests Europe's largest economy is bouncing back, and that - given Germany's importance as a trading nation - is a sign of recovery in the global economy. It's not just German exports that have revived. Most paper is made from wood fibers. Logs are chopped into wood chips, mixed with water and chemicals, and run through a process that separates the wood fibers. The soupy mush that results is called pulp. The pulp is pressed onto a mesh conveyor belt that squeezes the water out. As the pulp moves along the belt, the wood fibers line up in the direction of the belt’s travel. This alignment of the fibers on the belt gives the paper a grain. This grain is what causes the paper to tear straighter one way than the other. When paper is ripped with the grain, the tear goes with the direction of the fibers, and is fairly straight. When you tear the paper across the grain, the tear tends to wander as it works against the direction of the fibers. 201111/159876

It took Shawn 5 years to get the first half of their merit badges, the rest less than 5 months. He did it for his zealing grandmother. She's like, "Shaw, why don t we both follow with this? You really, you aly half way there, and I really think you can do it. Everyone thought I couldn’t do it. So, That most time. . . she always believed me. Sadly, his grandmother passed away when Shawn was just 18 badges shy of reaching the extraordinary. His grandfather then made of his mission to see shawn succeed, with / help from scoutmaster Joe Acquafreddaat a troop 240 in the Bronx, who at first was skeptical. Shawn reached his goal last month, while a freshman in Binghamton University where he's a business major with a love for politics. In high school he interned for Senato Charles Sehumer and a couple of days ago met one of his icons, Mary Michael Bloomberg, a businessman and fellow Eagle scout. And it’s no surprise that Shawn one day wants to go into politics and take with him the public office the skills and expertise he learnt in scouts, mainly honesty and integrity. I see how great politicians , how they fall so easily. These, one lie and they get caught doing it. So not only is morally correct, which is one of the parts of scout law and oaths , to be morally shame. It s worth it in the long run. you have my vote, Shawn. Rob Royer, Picks News at ten.01/60735

Obama Confers with US Governors on Economy, Health Care and Education奥巴马与州长们磋商经济医保和教育问题U.S. President Barack Obama is turning to the nation's governors for help in meeting his domestic priorities. State leaders came to the White House for closed-door discussions on the economy, health care and education. The private meeting began with a few public remarks by the president, in which he focused on issues of vital interest to the governors. He said they are working together to rebuild the economy, after a series of emergency measures to end the recession and help key industries survive. Mr. Obama said he understands the toll the recession took on state governments that found themselves with less tax revenue and a rising need for services. Overall, the economy is in a better place than it was a year ago," he said. "We were contracting by six percent. We are now growing by six percent. But I know that your states are still in a very tough situation and too many Americans still have not felt the recovery in their own lives." The president spoke about ongoing efforts to create jobs. He also talked about actions to put America on a stronger economic footing in the future, by improving education standards across the country. 201002/97068Australia should be a republic: PMAustralia should move to be a republic when reign of Queen Elizabeth II ends, Australian Prime Minister Julia Gillard said on Tuesday.Gillard also planned to lead a national debate on republic after the reign of Queen Elizabeth II, 84, ends. The prime minister said that despite being a republican, she understood that Australians had a "deep affection" for the British monarch."What I would like to see as prime minister is that we work our way through to an agreement on a model for the republic," Gillard told reporters in Townsville of Queensland."I think the appropriate time for this nation to move to be a republic is when we see the monarch change."Obviously I'm hoping for Queen Elizabeth that she lives a long and happy life, and having watched her mother I think there's every chance that she will."According to A News, Gillard's comments put her absolutely at odds with Opposition Leader Tony Abbott, who is a staunch monarchist and was at the center of the anti-republican cause in the 1999 referendum, which rejected the notion of change.Since Federation on January 1, 1901, Australia has maintained a stable liberal democratic political system and is a Commonwealth realm, which has Elizabeth II as its monarch. The comments reveal one of the few areas of genuine difference between the candidates ahead of Saturday's elections, where Gillard is leading Abbott by four percentage points, according to the latest Newspoll.Vocabulary:at odds with: at variance; in disagreement with(争执,不一致)monarchist: 君主制主义者背单词 — 装英语词汇201008/111663Better busy than doing nothing, scientist provesThe secret to happiness is keeping busy, research has found.Keeping the mind occupied with tasks - no matter how meaningless - staves off negative emotions, the study found. However, the bad news is that humans seem hard-wired to be lazy in order to save energy, according to Professor Christopher Hsee, a behavioural scientist at Chicago University. In a study 98 students were asked to complete two surveys. After they had completed the first they were made to wait 15 minutes to receive the next one. They were given a choice of either handing in the first survey nearby or at a more distant location they had to walk to. Whichever option they chose, they received a chocolate bar.Two-thirds (68 per cent) chose the lazy option. Those who had taken the walk reported feeling happier than those who had stayed put.Prof Hsee concluded keeping busy helped keep people happy. He said the findings, reported in the journal Psychological Science, had policy implications."Governments may increase the happiness of idle citizens by having them build bridges that are actually useless", he proposed. At the individidual level, he advised: "Get up and do something. Anything. Even if there really is no point to what you are doing, you will feel better for it."He added: "Incidentally, thinking deeply or engaging in self-reflection counts as keeping busy, too."You do not need to be running around, – you just need to be engaged, either physically or mentally."Vocabulary:stave off: succeed in stopping sth. bad happening for a while(暂时挡住,避开)hard-wired: 深植于脑中的incidentally: 顺便提一句背单词 — 装英语词汇201008/110549

Car biz in crisis Caught between high gas prices and the growing credit crunch, the aly struggling auto industry is being squeezed. Robert Crisafi didn't need to see the latest startled sales numbers to know the picture's grip. A dramatic drop in used cars sales has put his 25-year-old business in jeopardy. Nobody is buying cars. Finance companies aren't financing. And people can't get loans. From car dealers to car makers, the credit crunch is dealing a devastating blow, siding very tight credit conditions. Ford says its sales plunged 35% in September. Chrysler dropped 31%. And GM 16%. Japaness auto-maker Toyoto had its worst monthly drop in 21 years. Telling credits anaylists, they are bigger told than expected. Six out of ten new vehicles are purchased with their loan. And that portion of market is now being pulled back. You are seeing major declines and frankly ,credit has to be loosened for the industry to come back. And to industry that was aly struggling, high gas prices caused consumers to pull back early this year and that digged the sales. On Tuesday, the president signed out a 25-billion-dollar loan package for troubled auto-makers. But the worst may not be over. The traffic hit the last ten days of Semptember was far worst than first ten days of Sempemter. So it's seem to be an exhilarating problem for that. While the industry faces potential plant closing and job cuts, car dealers are being squeezed. CarMax, the nation's largest used car retailer, announced 600 lay-offs. The National Auto Mobile Sale Association says so far this years, 600 auto dealerships have closed down, and more are expected. For CNN Money. com , I am Mary Snow. The Chinese mainland has reported its first suspected case of A/H1N1 flu, in Chengdu, the capital of southwest China's Sichuan Province. The Ministry of Health says the 30 year-old man suspected of carrying the virus had returned to Beijing from the ed States via Tokyo on Saturday afternoon, on flight NW-029. He then flew from Beijing to Chengdu on flight U8882 the same day. The patient is receiving treatment at a local Infectious Disease Hospital and is in a stable condition. The local government told a press conference early on Monday that more than 130 of the 150 passengers aboard flight U8882 have been found and put into quarantine. A team of experts sent by the Ministry of Health has arrived in Chengdu to help control and prevention work. The local health department is asking anyone who had close contact with the patient to undergo observation and possible quarantine.05/69546Turmoil in the Middle East and North Africa in the past few months has driven the price of oil on the world market to more than 0 a barrel, causing a spike in fuel prices in the ed States that is putting a crimp in transportation budgets for families and businesses alike. For the moment anyway, people are taking it in stride. Filling up at the gasoline pump has become much more expensive in recent weeks as the sharp rise in crude oil prices comes down to the ordinary consumer. Most people, including this woman, are not happy about it. “I am a college student and I have to drive 45 minutes to college, so it [is terrible].” Many people are making adjustments, driving less or using cars with better fuel economy if they have that option. Richard, who owns a gas-guzzling truck, said he may start leaving it at home more often. “I do work a ways from where I live, so I will have to drive the other car. We have a smaller car, a Ford Fusion, and that gets good gas mileage.” Most U.S. drivers are reacting calmly to the rise in fuel prices, partly because prices have not yet gone as high as they were in 2008, when oil went to more than 7 a barrel.

The revolution that Steve Jobs led is only just beginning乔布斯领导的革命只是刚刚开始WHEN it came to putting on a show, nobody else in the computer industry, or any other industry for that matter, could match Steve Jobs. His product launches, at which he would stand alone on a black stage and conjure up an “incredible” new electronic gadget in front of an awed crowd, were the performances of a master showman. All computers do is fetch and shuffle numbers, he once explained, but do it fast enough and “the results appear to be magic”. Mr Jobs, who died this week aged 56, spent his life packaging that magic into elegantly designed, easy-to-use products. The reaction to his death, with people leaving candles and flowers outside Apple stores and the internet humming with tributes from politicians, is proof that Mr Jobs had become something much more significant than just a clever money-maker. He stood out in three ways—as a technologist, as a corporate leader and as somebody who was able to make people love what had previously been impersonal, functional gadgets. Strangely, it is this last quality that may have the deepest effect on the way people live. The era of personal technology is in many ways just beginning. Apple of his eye他眼中的苹果As a technologist, Mr Jobs was different because he was not an engineer—and that was his great strength. Instead he was obsessed with product design and aesthetics, and with making advanced technology simple to use. He repeatedly took an existing but half-formed idea—the mouse-driven computer, the digital music player, the smartphone, the tablet computer—and showed the rest of the industry how to do it properly. Rival firms scrambled to follow where he led. In the process he triggered upheavals in computing, music, telecoms and the news business that were painful for incumbent firms but welcomed by millions of consumers. Within the wider business world, a man who liked to see himself as a hippy, permanently in revolt against big companies, ended up being hailed by many of those corporate giants as one of the greatest chief executives of his time. That was partly due to his talents: showmanship, strategic vision, an astonishing attention to detail and a dictatorial management style which many bosses must have envied. But most of all it was the extraordinary trajectory of his life (see article). His fall from grace in the 1980s, followed by his return to Apple in 1996 after a period in the wilderness, is an inspiration to any businessperson whose career has taken a turn for the worse. The way in which Mr Jobs revived the ailing company he had co-founded and turned it into the world’s biggest tech firm (bigger even than Bill Gates’s Microsoft, the company that had outsmarted Apple so dramatically in the 1980s), sounds like something from a Hollywood movie—which, no doubt, it soon will be. But what was perhaps most astonishing about Mr Jobs was the fanatical loyalty he managed to inspire in customers. Which other technology brand do you ever see on bumper stickers? Many Apple users feel themselves to be part of a community, with Mr Jobs as its leader. And there was indeed a personal link. Apple’s products were designed to accord with the boss’s tastes and to meet his obsessively high standards. Every iPhone or MacBook has his fingerprints all over it. His great achievement was to combine an emotional spark with computer technology, and make the resulting product feel personal. And that is what put Mr Jobs on the right side of history, as the epicentre of technological innovation has moved into consumer electronics over the past decade. As our special report in this week’s issue (printed before Mr Jobs’s death) explains, innovation used to spill over from military and corporate laboratories to the consumer market, but lately this process has gone into reverse. Many people’s homes now have more powerful, and more flexible, devices than their offices do; consumer gizmos and online services are smarter and easier to use than most companies’ systems. Familiar consumer products are being adopted by businesses, government and the armed forces. Companies are employing in-house versions of Facebook and creating their own “app stores” to deliver software to smartphone-toting employees. Doctors use tablet computers for their work in hospitals. Meanwhile, the number of consumers hungry for such gadgets continues to swell. Apple’s products are now being snapped up in Delhi and Dalian just as in Dublin and Dallas. Mr Jobs had a reputation as a control freak, and his critics complained that the products and systems he designed were closed and inflexible, in the name of greater ease of use. Yet he also empowered millions of people by giving them access to cutting-edge technology. His insistence on putting users first, and focusing on elegance and simplicity, has become deeply ingrained in his own company, and is sping to rival firms too. It is no longer just at Apple that designers ask: “What would Steve Jobs do?” 现在,不仅仅只是在苹果公司才能听到设计师们这样问:“乔布斯会怎么做?”The gap between Apple and other tech firms is now likely to narrow. This week’s announcement of a new iPhone by a management team led by Tim Cook, who replaced Mr Jobs as chief executive in August, was generally regarded as competent but uninspiring. Without Mr Jobs to sprinkle his star dust on the event, it felt like just another product launch from just another technology firm. At the recent unveiling of a tablet computer by Jeff Bezos of Amazon, whose company is doing the best job of following Apple’s lead in combining hardware, software, content and services in an easy-to-use bundle, there were several swipes at Apple. But by doing his best to imitate Mr Jobs, Mr Bezos also flattered him. With Mr Jobs gone, Apple is just one of many technology firms trying to invoke his unruly spirit in new products. Mr Jobs was said by an engineer in the early years of Apple to emit a “reality distortion field”, such were his powers of persuasion. But in the end he conjured up a reality of his own, channelling the magic of computing into products that reshaped entire industries. The man who said in his youth that he wanted to “put a ding in the universe” did just that. 201110/157435Thousands Rally in US Capital, Demanding Immigration Reform数千人华盛顿集会要求改革移民政策Thousands of supporters of immigration reform rallied in the nation's capital on Sunday, voicing their frustration with the government's pace of handling the complex issue. Her likely replacement would be House Republican Leader John Boehner, who has pledged to reverse what he sees as the free-spending ways of the Obama administration. 201011/117202
