Lots of people rely on the beep-beep-beep of an alarm clock. And while some start the morning with a cheerful press of the off button and a catlike stretch, others wake after a whack of the snooze button and another 10 minutes of rest. But do those extra few minutes help? One expert, David Dinges, chief of the Division of Sleep and Chronobiology in the Department of Psychiatry at the University of Pennsylvania#39;s Perelman School of Medicine, awakens the controversy. (University of Pennsylvania#39;s Perelman School of Medicine)精神病学部睡眠与生物钟学分部(Division of Sleep and Chronobiology in the Department of Psychiatry)主管、睡眠专家戴维·丁格斯(David Dinges)引发了人们对这个话题的争论。 Most sleep experts agree that seven to eight hours of shut-eye per night is optimal for adults. In a 2007 paper based on the annual American Time Use Survey, Dr. Dinges found 32.6% of Americans self-reported that they got less than 7.5 hours by going to bed late, then relied on alarm clocks to wake up. Surprisingly, the result isn#39;t a population of groggy people, but one that is getting more efficient sleep. #39;Assuming you#39;re healthy, you fall asleep faster when you#39;re sleep deprived,#39; Dr. Dinges says. #39;You move less, you#39;re harder to awaken, you sleep more intensely.#39; Eventually the body will reset itself to a healthy state of normal sleep patterns, in what is called the homeostatic response. #39;This is all fine, but it only works when you have time to recover with longer sleep every few days, which most people don#39;t,#39; Dr. Dinges says. You Snooze, You Win Heavy sleepers and sleep-deprived people use the alarm clock to terminate sleep unnaturally, says Dr. Dinges. When people wake up on their own it feels better, though few people do this, according to data from 136,000 Americans from 2003 to 2012 in the time-use survey. Most people aren#39;t getting more sleep when they snooze -- just more time to awaken, Dr. Dinges says. #39;It feels like a blissful dream state because the closer you get to wakening, the more rapid-eye movement and dreams occur,#39; he explains. #39;Snoozing is not a great evil. The extra 10 minutes you get by snoozing can actually help to gently awaken the mind, rather than jolt it back to wakefulness,#39; he says. As people age, studies show that they need less sleep and can awaken alert more rapidly, Dr. Dinges#39; says. So even snooze-addicts can look forward to natural sleep patterns returning as they get older. #39;When I was in my 20s, I#39;d use multiple alarm clocks and snooze away, but now I#39;m in my mid-60s, so I don#39;t need that much sleep anymore,#39; he says. He very rarely hits the snooze button, he says. The Prime-Time Cure 黄金时段疗法In an ideal world, Dr. Dinges says, people would go to sleep a little bit earlier and not use an alarm clock at all. He would like to see TV networks schedule prime-time shows earlier. He encourages his patients to go to bed when they are tired, not when they fall asleep on the couch beside Jimmy Kimmel. #39;In studies in our lab, we#39;ve seen sleep restriction lead to weight gain,#39; he says. #39;Other studies have shown a connection between reduced sleep time and morbidity illness such as diabetes and heart disease.#39; Faking the brain into thinking it is getting more sleep by snoozing is a temporary cure, but it doesn#39;t help in the long term. #39;You#39;d be better off getting that extra 10 to 20 minutes of real sleep rather than doing that dance with the alarm clock,#39; says Dr. Dinges. /201404/284922

The latest fashion trend “normcore” isn’t all that fashionable – it celebrates the average and normal. Any old sneakers or sandals; a denim shirt or a black turtleneck, like Steve Jobs’; a zip-up fleece; or a roomy (not baggy) pair of jeans. If you wear any of these, you are the fashion icon of the day, even though you may not be interested in fashion at all. On social networks like Twitter and Instagram, normcore is the Internet meme of the year. Normcore was featured in fashion magazines like GQ and Vogue and was the talk of February and March’s fashion weeks in New York, Paris, Milan and London. The word was first coined by a New York fashion trend-forecasting agency called K-Hole, which recently released the report “Youth Mode: A Report on Freedom”. “Normcore finds liberation in being nothing special, and realizes that adaptability leads to belonging,” announced K-Hole. The basic idea, according to a New York Times article, is that young people have devoted so much energy to trying to define themselves as individuals, that they have lost the joy of belonging that comes with being part of the group.“Normcore就是从平淡无奇中寻求自由,通过适应来获得归属感,”这正是K-Hole宣称的理念。 Normcore is about letting go of pretenses and learning to throw yourself into whatever subcultures or activities you stumble into, even if they are mainstream. “You might not understand the rules of football, but you can still get a thrill from the roar of the crowd at the World Cup,” the K-Hole report .“Normcore”就是要摒弃假面伪装,学会融入你无意间接触到的任何亚文化或活动,即使是随波逐流之嫌。 The agency described normcore as more of a sociological attitude. But shortly after the release of the report, New York magazine ran a piece that established normcore as a fashion trend, calling it “fashion for those who know they’re one in seven billion”.K-Hole公司将“normcore”描述成一种社会态度。 The concept of normcore is all about the joy of the ordinary, and it has struck a chord with many people. Alain de Botton, the British writer and philosopher, thinks it makes a lot of sense.“Normcore”宣扬的是来平凡的快乐,这种观念打动了很多人的心弦。 “Normcore is the search for the ideal,” he said in an interview with Newsweek. “The perfect T-shirt, like the perfect pencil or table, doesn’t need to be constantly updated because it has latched on to the essence of what it’s trying to do. Humans like one-off ideals: one god, one partner. That urge sometimes washes over into clothes: one type of T-shirt. The better the design, the less it needs to change.”“‘Normcore’是对完美的追求,”他在接受美国《新闻周刊》采访时说道。 Even those in the fashion industry are ily admitting they see the appeal of normcore. US Vogue’s contributing editor Plum Sykes was ed by Newsweek as saying: “Wearing ‘fashion’ all the time gets too much – and it demands too much attention.”《新闻周刊》援引《Vogue》美国版特约编辑普拉姆#8226;赛克斯的一句话:“一如既往的时尚穿着负担太重,需要太多的关注。”Richard Nicoll, a London-based designer and creative director at the casual clothes chain Jack Will, also sang its praises: “Normcore says, ‘I have soul and intelligence. I’m unique and I don’t need to shout about it.’” /201406/305933

Singles Day in China is the celebration -- or mourning -- of being unattached. Started by students in Nanjing in the mid-1990s, the date was selected in observation of its four solitary digits: 11/11. While relatively obscure in most other countries, Singles Day is likely to increase in prominence as more single men in China are unable to find female partners. According to a recent study by the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences, more than 24 million Chinese men could find themselves without spouses by 2020. Celebrating Singles Day comes in many forms across the Asian nation, and like Christmas and Valentine#39;s Day, it has become a multi-million dollar industry. The Fig Tree, a luxury pastry school in downtown Beijing, is offering a chocolate truffle-making course to foster ;fun, flirting, measuring and mixing,; among singles on Thursday. ;Baking brings people together,; said Lin Zhong, school owner and pastry chef. ;[We] invite the city#39;s singles ... for an education in flirting and chocolate making.;“烘焙将人们的距离拉得更近”,校长及主厨Lin Zhong说道,“我们旨在邀请全城的单身人士…… For those with more adventurous tastes, Beijing#39;s flagship amusement park Happy Valley is hosting a day of activities for singles, featuring games that include a singing contest entitled ;Bachelor#39;s Love Song.; Another activity in store: a dedicated area in which singles can ;confess their true feelings.;对于那些更喜欢冒险的人来说,北京具有代表性的游乐园欢乐谷就将以一系列的游乐项目庆祝光棍节,其中包括一个名为“单身情歌”的歌唱比赛,另一个针对光棍们推出的活动叫做“说出你的爱”。All of this mingling comes at a price. For every male who buys a full price ticket for , he may bring one female along at no cost. Shenzhen#39;s theme park, Splendid China, which boasts miniature replicas of many of the country#39;s most famous landmarks, will host a vegetable hunting contest, much like an Easter egg hunt, to encourage singles to meet. The vegetables, mostly cucumbers and tomatoes, will be hidden throughout the park in a scaled-down Great Wall and bite-size Forbidden City. In Shanghai, the city#39;s main ;marriage market; nestled in People#39;s Park is teeming with more traffic than usual. Concerned parents of unmarried children posted personal ads and photos, boasting their education, salary levels and height and weight proportions. The advertisements line the perimeter of the park, and many anxious parents sit along the curb, hoping to meet another set of parents to make a good match. To the west in the city of Xian, singles can reenact a famous Tang Dynasty love story or learn about the principles of love at Qujiang Cave Ruins Park, which claims to be the ;first love-themed park in China.;往西走,在古都西安,单身人士们能参与扮演一个有名的唐代爱情故事,或在曲江寒窑遗址公园学习爱情守则,据说这是中国第一个爱情主题公园。However, in a society dominated by children who grow up without siblings (due to China#39;s one-child policy), finding love on Singles Day is unlikely to be as easy as a walk in the park. ;For a lot of young men, they feel that what can make them more attractive to their potential dates is their good education, a good job and a lot of money ... [and] a car and apartment handy so they can attract more women,; said Dr. Chang Wei, a psychologist at Beijing ed Family Hospital. ;That leads to a lot of young men working 10-12 hours a day with no time to socialize. Parents feel they have to step in and help them find dates, and sometimes the men are okay with that.;“很多年轻男人认为,自己的教育背景、工作和钱财将决定自己在异性面前的吸引力…… Not everyone desires to be matched up, though. In a survey of white-collar workers on popular Chinese jobs site Zhaopin.com, about 70 percent of married or committed individuals said they missed being single. Once frowned upon in China, divorce is now common, too. In 2009, more than 2.46 million couples divorced in the country, almost twice the number in 2001. But like many singles in China, Alexandra Shi, an undergraduate student at Beijing Foreign Studies University, is looking for love. This year, she#39;ll mark the day with her fellow single friends, and they will likely take one chopstick and make a wish to not be ;a #39;single stick#39; anymore.;Alexandra Shi ;Being single is not cool...for me, being in a relationship would do me good I guess,; Shi said. ;But being single for now doesn#39;t make my life miserable. Definitely don#39;t want to celebrate next year#39;s Singles Day though!;“单身并不酷…… /201311/263954

Shop assistants in luxury stores are perhaps the most snobbish group of people. In their presence we feel we have to wear expensive coats to survive their judging looks. But according to research from Harvard Business School, putting on your ordinary gym sweatpants in a luxury store may boost your standing in the eyes of store assistants. Why? Because sticking out in distinct ways in certain circumstances can make you seem more successful and important than you actually are. In a series of studies recently published in the Journal of Consumer Research, Silvia Bellezza, a doctoral student, and two Harvard professors tried to examine what observers thought of individuals who deviated from the norm in the workplace and in a retail setting, The Wall Street Journal reported. What they found was that being a little different can socially benefit people — in some situations. “The problem is that conforming to noraptms is an easy and safe spot to be in,” Bellezza told The Wall Street Journal. “If you’re willing to deviate, there are upsides.” But, she also warned that acting differently risks losing the benefits that come with conforming, such as shared group identity and trust.“问题在于,遵守定规是一种简单而安全的做法。” In their first study, they asked shop assistants in Milan to rate what they thought of people who walked into luxury stores wearing gym clothes. They were also asked to rate those who wore outfits typically considered more appropriate in luxury stores, like a dress and a fur coat. You may think that a well-dressed individual was more likely to have the money to buy something in the store. But shop assistants thought the opposite. They assumed that a client wearing gym clothes was confident enough to not need to dress up more, and therefore more apt to be a celebrity making a purchase than someone wearing fur. The study found the same pattern emerged in academic and workplace settings: Students showed more respect to a fictitious bearded professor who wore a T-shirt than to a clean-shaven one who wore a suit and tie. Candidates entering a business-plan competition who chose to use their own PowerPoint presentation background were thought more likely to win than those who used the standard background. However, not everyone can benefit from looking different. For example, wearing jeans to a formal event is always a social mistake. Andrew Luecke, a writer for the lifestyle magazine Esquire, said Harvard’s research should not be used as an excuse for not caring about one’s style and grooming. “You must know the rules to break them properly,” Luecke said. “Not just any filthy jeans will get you four-star service at luxury stores. They must be the perfect filthy jeans that fit properly and convey a sense of knowing but not caring. To paraphrase Sun-Tzu, ‘If you know your enemies’ swag and your swag, you will not be imperiled in a hundred battles.’”“你必须学会恰如其分地打破常规,”路耶克说,“在奢侈品店,不是任何一条破洞牛仔裤都能带来四星级务,只有时尚得不露痕迹且非常合身的破洞牛仔裤才能做到。 /201408/318026

If you#39;re not sure where to start in the process, note the techniques listed below for finding theperfect shoe for your needs. Figure out how you run (outside of your foot, outside to inside, or straight down the middle). The easiestway to determine how you run is to look at an old pair of running shoes. If the shoe is worn on the outside ofthe heel and rolls inward excessively, you have a pronated foot type - the majority of the population (60%)fits into this category. You#39;re more likely to have this foot type if you are flat footed. If you have high arches, your foot is rigid and doesn#39;t pronate (roll inward) so there is not an effective shockabsorber. Roughly 30% of the population has high-arched or supinated foot types. If you land on the outside of your heel and roll inward slightly to absorb shock, you are of normal weight, youare considered the most sound (biomechanically) runner. Only about 10% of the population hasneutral/ideal feet. Tips for Your Trip to the Shoe Store: Examine your old shoes for t wear. Socks are important. Wear your running socks when you try on. If your feet are different sizes, buy for the larger one. Shoes with better breathability will help curb sweating. The August Moon Festival or Mid-Autumn Festival (Chinese characters above) is one of the traditional Chinese holidays. It is held on the 15th day of the 8th lunar month. Chinese legends say that the moon is at its brightest and roundest on this day. Based on the Gregorian calendar, this year#39;s August Moon Festival will be held on September 12. The August Moon Festival is often called the Women#39;s Festival. The moon (Chinese character on right) symbolizes elegance and beauty. While Westerners worship the sun (yang or male) for its power, people in the Far East admire the moon. The moon is the #39;yin#39; or female principle and it is a trusted friend. Chinese parents often name their daughters after the moon, in hope that they will be as lovely as the moon. The Moon FairyLady - #39;Chang Er#39;月亮仙子——嫦娥In fact, many ancient August Moon folktales are about a moon maiden. On the 15th night of the 8th lunar moon, little children on earth can see a lady on the moon. The story about the lady took place around 2170 B.C. At that time, the earth had ten suns circling it, each taking its turn to illuminate to the earth. But one day all ten suns appeared together, scorching the earth with their heat. The earth was saved by a strong and tyrannical archer named Hou Yi. He succeeded in shooting down nine of the suns. One day, Hou Yi stole the elixir of life from a goddess. However, his beautiful wife Chang E drank the elixir of life in order to save the people from her husband#39;s tyrannical rule. After drinking it, she found herself floating and flew all the way to the moon. Hou Yi loved his divinely beautiful wife so much, he refused to shoot down the moon. People believed that the lady was a god who lived in the moon that made the moon shine. Girls who wanted to be a beauty and have a handsome husband should worship the moon. And on this magical occasion, children who make wishes to the Lady on the Moon will find their dreams come true. The wood cutter - Wu Kang伐木人——吴刚Wu Kang was a shiftless fellow who changed apprenticeships all the time. One day he decided that he wanted to be an immortal, so he went to live in the mountains where he importuned an immortal to teach him. First the immortal taught him about the herbs used to cure sickness, but after three days his characteristic restlessness returned and Wu Kang asked the immortal to teach him something else. So the immortal taught him chess, but after a short while Wu Kang#39;s enthusiasm again waned. Then Wu Kang was given the books of immortality to study. Of course, Wu Kang became bored within a few days, and asked if they could travel to some new and exciting place. Angered with Wu Kang#39;s impatience, the master banished Wu Kang to the Moon Palace telling him that he must cut down a huge cassia tree before he could return to earth. Though Wu Kang chopped day and night, the magical tree restored itself with each blow, and thus he is up there chopping still. /201309/256480

When Lady Gaga releases a catchy new single, it quickly goes around the world. Now scientists have discovered the same thing happens with the songs of another exotic creature – the humpback whale. The mammals become fixated on new tunes just like people do, and the most popular original whale songs sp globally like hit singles. Number one artist? Humpback whales become fixated on new tunes. The most popular original whale songs sp around the world like hit singles当“闻名遐迩”的音乐奇才嘎嘎发行自己的又一张新专辑,再一次“轻而易举”地将自己的音乐享誉全球的时候,科学家惊喜地发现同样的音乐天才不仅仅局限于人类这个物种,在海底的鲸鱼也同样有“发行音乐专辑”并“唱歌”的权利。 The discovery has stunned marine experts who say it is the first time such a large, ‘population wide cultural exchange’ has been seen in the animal kingdom. Male humpback whales are famed for the loud, long and complex songs they make during the mating season. Scientists are unsure why the males sing. Some believe it is a way of advertising themselves to females, others that it allows migrating whales to stay in contact。 Each song lasts for ten to 20 minutes and the males can sing continuously for 24 hours. At any one time, all the males in a population sing the same song. But a study, published in the journal Current Biology, shows that this song changes over time and sps around the oceans. Dr Ellen Garland, of Queensland University, said: ‘Our findings reveal cultural change on a vast scale. Songs move like cultural ripples from one population to another, causing all males to change their song to a new version.’ /201403/282954。

Stop for a moment and ask yourself if there was ever a time (or times) you’ve arrogantly said or thought: “I’m too smart for this.” If you’re someone who always believed that you’re Mr. Smarty Pants, you may want to take a step back and contemplate. That kind of thinking can work against you in life and in work. So while it’s difficult to face the truth, let’s entertain the possibility that you may not be as smart as you think you are. Read on and check if you have the following signs:面对现实并不容易——为什么说你没有自认为的那样聪明? 1. You’re more of a talker than a listener你爱倾诉,不擅倾听And that’s putting it nicely. You like the sound of your own voice, with or without you knowing it. People don’t come to you to talk about their problems or even celebrate their successes because you always end up talking about your own problems and successes. If this sounds like you, consciously decide to listen and focus on the what the person is saying the next time you’re in a conversation with someone. Don’t try to upstage them, just listen. You show off only the good stuff and make some up你只炫耀好的一面,还会编造一些You hide your true personality. You fake it. Big time. While it’s good to always be at your best when meeting important people, you take it to a whole other level: You lie so that people have a better impression of you. Smart people value truth and know better than to hide for the sake of looking good. Showing only your good side and adding some special effects will tire you in the long run. 3. You’re always in the middle of a storm你总处在风暴中心You always find yourself in the middle of conflict. And when you think back on it, you either caused that conflict or you added fuel to the flames. Smart people, on the other hand, either don’t get involved when there’s nothing they can do or do their best to help end the conflict. Try to do the same. 4. You discourage people instead of lifting them up你不鼓励别人,反倒打击别人You discourage people, not just by saying so outright but also by not giving them the time of day. In a way, you’re telling them that their ideas or their problems are not worth your time or your (perceived) intelligence. Smart people help encourage others by actually paying attention. They listen (note the first sign) and share what they know. If big shots like Richard Branson and Adm. William McRaven, commander in the U.S. special forces, can take the time to answer letters from kids, you can spend a few minutes encouraging people. You prefer lowbrow entertainment你喜欢低俗You don’t challenge yourself with difficult subjects and are content to stick to entertaining yet hardly thought-provoking ing material. You also spend hours watching bad reality TV. Real smart people thrive on ing books and watching films that spark their creativity and make them think and question. A few hours of intellectual ing could open up your horizons so give it a shot. You can start by listening to audiobooks if the thought of ing thick books is daunting to you. 6. You’re always so busy你总是忙忙碌碌Your work life consists of you running around like a headless chicken. There always seems to be a problem that takes up most of your work day. You also find yourself doing all the work, all the time. Learn how to delegate and ask for help. It’s a little arrogant of you to think that you can do everything for everyone. Make it a point to rest and spend time on things that matter in life, not just work. You may have been praised a lot when you were a child, a teen, or a college student because of your high grades and other academic achievements. That’s great. Ego boosts now and then are healthy and needed. But strive for more than just accolades. If you truly want to be smart but find yourself guilty of the signs above, now’s the chance to make a change. Be a smarter, better version of you. /201311/265465
