Microsoft and Barnes amp; Noble write their own love story. LAST July Barnes amp; Noble gave a presentation to the antitrust division of America#39;s Department of Justice. In slide after slide, the bookseller laid into Microsoft. The software giant, it thundered, was guilty of ;anti-competitive behaviour; in demanding royalties from makers of mobile devices (such as the Nook, Barnes amp; Noble#39;s e-er) that used Android, Google#39;s open-source mobile operating system. The bookseller sniffed that Microsoft owned only ;trivial; patents and reminded the department of the software company#39;s past trespasses against competition. Nine months later, the bookworms and the geeks are the best of friends. On April 30th Barnes amp; Noble said it was creating a subsidiary, called NewCo for now, into which it would put Nook and its ;college; business, which has 641 bookshops on American campuses.4月30日,Barnes amp; Noble宣布成立名为NewCo的分公司,该公司主营Nook和在美国校园拥有641家书店的;高校;业务部。Microsoft is putting up 0m for 17.6% of NewCo. People will be able to buy and e-books through a Nook application for Windows 8, a new incarnation of Microsoft#39;s operating system that is due to appear in a few months. Microsoft will pay NewCo an advance of 0m over three years for such purchases, plus 5m over five years to buy content and develop technology. The squabbles over patents have been settled: Microsoft is giving Barnes amp; Noble a licence for the Nook and will get royalties in return. For now at least, the Nook will remain an Android, not Windows, device. The agreement values NewCo at .7 billion, more than twice Barnes amp; Noble#39;s market capitalisation before it was announced. The bookseller#39;s share price rose by 50% on the day of the deal—which tells you what investors think of the dead-tree end of the trade. The alliance should bring Barnes amp; Noble not only cash but also new ers of digital books and magazines, especially outside the ed States. In the fourth quarter of 2011, according to Tom Mainelli of IDC, a research firm, Barnes amp; Noble accounted for one-fifth of the 7m e-ers shipped in America—against a mighty three-quarters for Amazon, maker of the Kindle (see chart). But Barnes amp; Noble shipped no Nooks elsewhere, which helps explain why it had only 14% of the global market. Via the Nook app, non-Americans will also be able to leaf through Barnes amp; Noble#39;s digital catalogue. Microsoft is in effect buying a second bash at a market where it made an early but unsuccessful start. It launched its own e-er software all of 12 years ago.12年前,微软就曾发布过自己的电纸书软件。The deal with Barnes amp; Noble, bringing lots of content with it, may give people an extra reason to buy Windows 8 tablets (a likelier choice for e-ing than smartphones, laptops or desktops) when they appear. The bundling of Barnes amp; Noble#39;s college business into NewCo indicates hope that a fair few of these customers will be students. Allen Weiner of Gartner , another research firm, suggests that through campus bookshops Barnes amp; Noble could sell Windows devices pre-loaded with course material. Of course, others are after students#39; dollars too. Apple recently started selling interactive digital textbooks for the iPad, far and away the biggest-selling tablet (among its publishing partners is Pearson, part-owner of The Economist). But Mr Weiner points out that Microsoft and Barnes amp; Noble have some advantages. Lots of students write notes and essays with Microsoft#39;s Office software, which is not available on the iPad. And although Amazon sells and rents a lot of paper textbooks, it has not done much with digital ones. The tie-up with Barnes amp; Noble makes three of a kind for Microsoft: cheap deals with struggling but established partners in markets where it is weak and sees a chance to do much better. In 2009 it struck an agreement with Yahoo! in online search.2009年,微软与雅虎就网上搜索达成协议。Last year Nokia became the prime conduit for Windows in smartphones. With Barnes amp; Noble it is having another stab at e-ing. Unlike the books on the Nook, this tale is still being written. /201210/203603

Texting while driving can be deadly. Talking on the phone while walking is also deadly, or at least threatening enough. Researchers at Dartmouth College in America and the University of Bologna in Italy thought it necessary to develop a smartphone app that can make those things safer. Their Android app uses machine learning and image recognition, which takes place right on your phone to alert you when you#39;re chatting your way right into an oncoming smash-up. The app uses the outward facing camera on a smartphone to help a pedestrian look both ways (at least one way). Using vision algorithms built into the app, the system determines which way cars on the roadway are facing and whether or not they are moving. Then it takes into account the tilt of the phone and varies light conditions to establish an accurate picture of the roadway. Therefore, it figures out if any approaching vehicle is a threat to the user. The app, known as WalkSafe, can detect cars moving 30 miles per hour at more than 160 feet. While a careless user is on jaywalking and talking on the phone, the app can be very useful. It warns the user via auditory and vibrating alerts before he or she is struck down by a moving car at high speed. Unless a car is coming from another direction, the app can really improve safety. However, it#39;s worth noting that despite the cleverness of WalkSafe, you shouldn#39;t completely trust it with your life. It#39;s not meant to replace our common sense and attention. /201206/186732

It’s been about one year since John Chen, CEO of BlackBerry, took the top job at the struggling phonemaker. Since then, he has embarked on a campaign to bring the company back to its roots and spark new innovations and partnerships where he feels necessary—in short, to make BlackBerry relevant to business users again. To that end, this week in San Francisco Chen took the stage to make a number of announcements, including a recently-inked agreement with smartphone maker Samsung Electronics. According to the deal, both companies will sell each other’s mobile security products. (A true sign of the times: Chen joked with the audience about the fact his wife still uses a Samsung Galaxy phone.) The company also announced an updated BlackBerry Enterprise server, which will allow customers to more easily manage BlackBerries and devices made by other manufacturers. Under Chen’s direction, BlackBerry’s losses are improving, but the company is still bleeding money and there is still plenty of cause for concern about its long-term prospects. Ahead of his announcements in San Francisco, Fortune caught up with Chen to hear more about his strategy—and Kim Kardashian. Fortune: What does returning to BlackBerry’s roots mean to you today?《财富》:“回到黑莓的根基”在今天对你来说意味着什么?Chen: The overall returning to the roots is much beyond the device. The Classic [an upcoming BlackBerry device that will bring back its traditional trackpad] is an important part but it’s not the only part. Very early in my career here I talked about re-pivoting back to the enterprise. It implies not only the devices but also the enterprise using our software and server as the backbone. When BlackBerry was doing well almost everyone was running on BlackBerry enterprise server. When we lost our focus we lost quite a bit of traction and accounts. But the reason I went back to the Classic is that a tremendous number of customers want it. In light of that “return to roots, ” how do you view innovation at BlackBerry? What role does it play today? The guiding principle of our development teams is that everybody is focused on the following pillars: security, privacy, productivity, and collaboration. We focus on all of those. For example, on BBM [BlackBerry Messenger] we just released the timed message feature—people call it the “Snapchat feature.” We allow people to retract messages, not just to recall them. The whole design center is really focused on security, privacy, productivity and collaboration. We’re not trying to compete on everything. Winning back developers is another aspect of returning to BlackBerry’s roots. How are you feeling about status with developer ecosystem? There are only a handful of apps, like Facebook, that we build native. We are relying on our relationship with Amazon for the others. Everything that appears on Amazon’s app store you can run on BB10 [the latest version of BlackBerry’s operating system]. In doing so we free up our enterprise developer community to focus on developer platforms. On that front the re-pivoting is only six to nine months old since I came in. We have some good traction but still a lot of work to be done. /201411/343918

The next iPhone, which Apple Inc. plans to unveil this week, could do something the White House, Congress and Federal Reserve have struggled to do: boost the U.S. economy. Sales of the new iPhone could add between a quarter and a half of a percentage point to the annualized rate of economic growth in the fourth quarter, J.P. Morgan Chase amp; Co.#39;s chief U.S. economist Michael Feroli estimates. That could help cushion the sluggish U.S. economy from other risks in the final months of the year. In a note to clients Monday, titled #39;Can one little phone impact GDP?,#39; Mr. Feroli walks through the math: J.P. Morgan#39;s equity analysts expect Apple to sell about eight million new iPhone units in the final three months of 2012. If the phone sells for around 0, with about 0 of it counted as imported components, then 0 per phone would add to the government#39;s measure of gross domestic product, the total value of the economy#39;s output. Even though consumers may not pay that much for the phone, because of subsidies from wireless carriers, Mr. Feroli explains that companies often report phone sales based on the price of the stand-alone product. The bottom line: The new iPhone sales could boost GDP by .2 billion in the fourth quarter, or .8 billion at an annual rate. That is an increase of 0.33 percentage point in the annualized rate of GDP growth. It could be even higher, he says. Even a third of a percentage point would limit the risk the economy would grow more slowly than J.P. Morgan#39;s fourth-quarter growth projection of 2%. Mr. Feroli warns that the estimate #39;seems fairly large, and for that reason should be treated skeptically#39; but adds: #39;We think the recent evidence is consistent with this projection.#39;弗洛里警告说,这个估计数字看起来似乎相当大,所以应当抱怀疑态度。 One clue: When the iPhone 4S became widely available last October, he writes, over half of the 0.8% increase in the nation#39;s so-called core retail sales─which exclude autos, gasoline and building materials─came in the categories of online sales and computer and software sales. The two categories together had their largest monthly increase on record. He estimates the sales growth was due to the iPhone, which boosted overall GDP growth by a fifth to a 10th of a percentage point. The new iPhone launch will be even bigger than that, he says, making the latest estimate #39;reasonable.#39;费洛里估计这种增长得益于iPhone,它使整个GDP增速提高了0.1至0.2个百分点。 In the final three months of last year, the U.S. economy expanded rapidly at a 4.1% annual rate, and then slowed sharply to a 2% pace in the first quarter of this year, and 1.7% in the second quarter. 1.7%。Many analysts have recently lowered their forecasts for economic growth in the second half of the year for reasons including the drought, higher oil prices and uncertainty about U.S. budget policies. Last week, the forecasting firm Macroeconomic Advisers shaved its forecasts for economic growth to a 1.5% annual rate in the third-quarter and 1.4% in the fourth quarter, both down seven-tenths of a percentage point, largely due to the effect of the drought on farm output. /201209/199132
