China’s capital is known for its horrendous smog and occasional sandstorms. Yet one of its major environmental threats lies underground: Beijing is sinking. Excessive pumping of groundwater is causing the geology under the city to collapse, according to a new study using satellite imagery that reveals parts of Beijing – particularly its central business district – are subsiding each year by as much as 11 centimetres, or more than four inches. The authors of the study warn that continued subsidence poses a safety threat to the city of more than 2o million, with “a strong impact on train operations” one of the predictions. The study on Beijing’s subsidence has been published in the peer-reviewed journal Remote Sensing and is based on InSAR, a type of radar that monitors land elevation changes. It was written by a team of seven researchers. “We are currently carrying out a detailed analysis of the impacts of subsidence on critical infrastructure (eg high-speed railways) in the Beijing plain,” they said in an email to the Guardian. “Hopefully a paper summarising our findings will come out later this year.” Beijing sits in a dry plain where groundwater has accumulated over millennia. As wells are drilled and the water table drops, the underlying soil compacts, much like a dried-out sponge. The study finds that the entire city is sinking but the subsidence is most pronounced in Beijing’s Chaoyang district, which has boomed since 1990 with skyscrapers, ringroads and other development. The researchers say the uneven nature of the subsidence in some areas poses risks to buildings and other infrastructure. Tens of thousands of water wells are thought to exist in and around Beijing, many of them used in farming and landscaping. The state has regulatory power over installation of wells but is inconsistent in applying it, according to one leading Chinese environmentalist. “There are some rules but the enforcement is doubtful,” said Ma Jun, director of the Institute of Public and Environmental Affairs in Beijing. Ma said he wasn’t surprised subsidence was relatively high in the Chaoyang district given its rapid growth of recent decades. He expected it to keep moving east as the city sprawled in that direction. China inaugurated a mega-engineering project aimed at mitigating Beijing’s water crisis. The state completed construction of the South-North Water Diversion. Even before the canal began delivering water, Beijing was easing up on some groundwater pumping. In January of 2015 the Chaoyang district announced plans to phase out 367 water wells, reducing the use of 10m cubic meters of underground water. Experts say it is still too early to know if the canal’s water deliveries will help recharge the aquifer and slow Beijing’s rate of subsidence. In the meantime concerns about impacts to buildings and rail systems continue. To prevent derailments a 2015 study recommended that China ban new water wells near completed high-speed rail lines. Other cities around the world are experiencing subsidence caused by excessive water pumping or other factors. Mexico City is sinking by up to 28cm a year and Jakarta is subsiding at a similar rate. Bangkok is dropping annually by as much as 12cm, similar to Beijing, according to the Remote Sensing researchers. /201606/451455

Planning a barbecue but worried about the weather? Don’t be put off: follow these tips for great grilling come rain or shine. Plus: recipes you can cook in the oven or over coals计划烧烤的同时会担心天气吗? When it comes to great British sports, barbecuing in the rain is right up there with aggressive queueing and passive-aggressive apologising as something we are born to do. Battling the elements, we tell each other as we tog up, is all part of the fun – but this summer is testing even my fondness for grilling in Gore-Tex. However bad the weather gets, don’t bring your barbecue into the garage or even the kitchen; carbon monoxide poisoning is much, much worse than wet feet. If you don’t happen to have an overhanging roof to keep things dry but well ventilated, invest in a large umbrella that will cover both you and the grill – a sturdy parasol will do the job, and free up your hands to turn the food and drink the beer. Where there’s rain there’s often wind, too, so make sure it’s well weighted down, or you could get a lot wetter once the fire brigade turns up. In really gusty conditions, position your barbecue at 90 degrees to the prevailing gale. A hands-free parasol might help …一个免提遮阳伞就可以做到……If you’re in the market for a new model, a kettle barbecue with a tight-fitting lid is a wise investment to keep the heat in and the water out. Bear in mind that whichever sort you have, rain will bring the temperature down, so it’s wise to add a little more charcoal than you usually would. Food will take longer to cook, and I find it’s also easier to burn things – mostly because I’m so reluctant to open the lid to check on them. If the weather looks uncertain, it’s better to have something that can either be cooked in advance and finished on the barbecue, as in the ribs recipe below, or that doesn’t require searing heat, such as the peppers. Save the steak and seafood for another day, and concentrate instead on stuff that can be cooked low and slow without too much interference from the chef; this is the time to break out the brisket, and make the most of side dishes that can be prepared in the kitchen. Sometimes, however, even the stoutest Brit has to admit defeat and head indoors. Happily, these recipes have been designed to be just as good whether you’re inside or out. Roasted red pepper and walnut soup, or chargrilled red pepper and walnut salad比如:烤红辣椒和核桃汤,或炭烤红辣椒和核桃沙拉。

You know the ladies we#39;re talking about: the ones at work, at book club, at PTA, hell even at the gym, who just seem effortless. You wonder how they dress so well but you can#39;t quite pinpoint the exact reasons why. Here#39;s what they do. 1. They Know the Devil Is in the Details1、她们懂得细节是关键所在A slight half tuck. A loose roll of the sleeve. Small extra steps go a long way in the presentation of an otherwise boring oxford shirt. 2. They Pay Special Attention to Fit2、她们对衣合身格外重视There are two rules of fit you must follow: 1) Know what looks great on your shape, and 2) befriend your tailor. Hemming those culottes jumpsuits by even just one inch could make all the difference. We#39;re not calling it a ;theme;...but rather a motif. If you want that new denim mini to stand out in a good way, pair it with wools and suedes (not silks and rayons). 4. They Make Their Nails a Priority4、她们总是优先考虑指甲You may think no one notices it#39;s been two weeks since your last mani. But they do. Trimmed nails and soft cuticles give the illusion that everything else you#39;re wearing is expensive and important. 5. They Take Care of their Things5、她们把自己的衣物整理得当Like your nails, people also notice raveling ths. Do a gut-check before you leave the house and steam out any wrinkles, buff off any shoe scuffs, clip any errant strings and give the ol#39; lint roller a whirl. 6. They Weave in New Trends...Subtly6、她们以一种精妙的方式融入潮流Raw-hemmed culotte jeans are a lot--we know. But ladies who always look put together? Always pair them with more classic, neutral pieces. 7. They Allow Themselves to Be Comfy (Not Sloppy)7、她们让自己保持舒适(不是邋遢哦)There#39;s a difference. Keep your sneakers clean and your elastic fabrics form-fitting and you should be just fine. 8. They Carry Themselves with Confidence8、她们身披自信But regardless of what you#39;re wearing, your posture speaks volume. Hold your chin up, your shoulders back and your tummy in. And whatever it is you#39;re wearing will suddenly hang the way it#39;s supposed to. /201607/454999
