I started following @2sisters_angie a little over a year ago. Back then she was posting the typical stuff you see from moms on Instagram -- pics of her daughter at the park and pics of her daughter eating breakfast. Then, about nine months ago, Angie#39;s feed started to change. It became clear Angie#39;s daughter (she calls her ;Mayhem;) was more interested in fashion than the average 4-year-old. Mayhem shunned her store-bought princess dresses and started wrapping herself with scarves and sheets creating her own styles. Then one day Angie got tired of finding her clothes in Mayhem#39;s toy box and suggested they make a dress out of paper. Mayhem loved the idea and they haven#39;t stopped creating paper dresses since. /201403/278494

What to Eat Before a Workout? What’s the best thing to eat before a workout, game, or race?在开始运动,游戏或者比赛之前,吃什么最好呢?(a) a candy bar or other sugary food 15 minutes before, (b) a protein shake or bar 30 minutes before, (c) a low-fat, high-carb meal or snack one to four hours before, (d) nothing; you should fast.(a) 锻炼前15分钟,吃块状糖或者其他含糖的食物。 The answer is usually (c), but it depends on the type, length and intensity of your activity, what you ate onprevious days, your metabolism and your personal preferences. If you’re just walking briskly or cycling for30 to 60 minutes, it doesn’t matter what you eat beforehand. But if you’re about to play singles tennis, go on a three hour bike ride or run for more than an hour, whatyou eat before—and during—the activity can affect your performance and how you feel. It’s important to find what works best for you. There’s no magic pre--exercise meal, but there are somegeneral guidelines for vigorous workouts lasting more than an hour. It’s best to eat one to four hours before the activity: the shorter the time to the event, the smaller the meal orsnack should be. Choose foods that are high in carbs (preferably complex carbs that are not high in fiber), low in fat andmoderate in protein—such as crackers, fruit, pasta or low--fat yogurt—and that “sit well” with you. The goal is to maintain blood sugar and carbohydrate stores in the body, but not have much undigestedfood in the stomach, which can cause indigestion, gas or other discomfort. Why should athletes love carbs? Carbohydrates are essential for athletic performance—in fact, for all physical as well as mental activity. They are the body’s major source of energy—in the form of glucose in the blood and glycogen (the stor-ageform of carbohydrates) in the muscles and liver—and are used more efficiently than proteins or fats. It’sparticularly important to eat enough carbs in the hours and days before prolonged activity (though special“carb--loading” regimens are no longer recommended). If you’re doing strength training, shouldn’t you eat more protein than carbs beforehand? No, the focus should stay on high-#172;carb foods. Weight lifters and endur-ance athletes do need more proteinthan other people, but because of their greater food intake, they get the extra protein with little trouble. Some research has found that consuming some protein shortly after strength training can boost musclesynthesis, however. What about the final hour before a workout? Years ago, experts advised not eating anything, especially sugary foods or drinks, shortly before exercising, since that can boost insulin levels and result in a drop in blood sugar, which could impair performance. Butinsulin levels go back down when you start to exercise. And the great majority of studies have found thateating carbs shortly before exercise actually improves performance or else has no effect on it. Again, it depends on what you’ll be doing, what you ate earlier and what you’ll consume while exercising. Ifyou do eat during the final hour, try a small low-fat snack (less than 200 calories) or a lightly sugared beverage. Is it better to get your pre--exercise calories and nutrients from liquids than from solid foods? Whatever works for you. It takes longer for solid foods to be digested compared to liquids, which could be agood or bad thing when you exercise, depending on the timing. But studies have generally found that itdoesn’t matter whether you get your pre--workout calories from food or beverages. Will fasting before exercise burn more body fat? No, what you eat before exercising has little or no effect on fat burning (oxidation). The body uses stored fatand carbs as fuel in varying pro-portions, depending on the length and intensity of the activities and othervariables. Studies on fasting in athletes have produced inconsis-tent results, and when they have found extra fatburning it is very modest. And some research has shown that people burn more fat when they eatsomething before exercising than when they fast. What’s more, for most people, fasting before intense orprolonged exercise will reduce energy levels and impair performance. Should you eat while exercising—and what? Yes, if you’re doing prolonged events such as long- distance running or cycling. For most people, a fewhours of sustained, vigorous activity will deplete their stored carbs, resulting in weakness, fatigue, and/orpain—what’s known as “hitting the wall.” So it’s important to eat small high--carb (again, low in fat and fiber)snacks to maintain blood sugar and fuel your muscles and brain. You can also get the carbs from beverages. What#39;s the best way to stay hydrated? If you exercise moderately for less than an hour, all you need to do is drink when you’re thirsty—and wateris fine. But for prolonged exercise, especially in hot weather, drink plenty of fluids. The American College of Sports Medicine recommends drinking fluids (about 15 ounces for a 165-#172;poundperson) at least four hours beforehand. Also drink at regular inter-vals during long workouts, even if you arenot thirsty, and drink adequately afterwards. For such endurance exercise, beverages with low to moderate sugar content as well as some potassium and sodium, such as sports drinks, are recommended. /201407/310205

Chinese tourists cross the world to seek out brands with a bit of historical pedigree, from Harrods to House of Fraser, the Scottish department store chain recently bought by a Chinese millionaire. But the country also has a few long-standing brands of its own. Perhaps not surprisingly-it#39;s rarely able to resist the urge to catalog things and stamp them with rubber stamps-China#39;s government keeps them on a careful list, even sending inspection teams from the Ministry of Commerce to check out potential future candidates. According to the ministry#39;s rules (in Chinese) contenders must have a pedigree that dates back to at least 1956, historical and cultural value, a good reputation and, of course, Chinese characteristics. Those that make the grade are granted an official seal of approval on their status as Lao Zihao, or #39;time-honored brands.#39; (Lao means old.) Local governments have their own parallel certification schemes. There are upwards of 10,000 Lao Zihao nationally, with 700 recognized by the central government, said Zhou Huaishan, CEO of the China Time-Honored Brands Network, a website that attempts to track all such brands. It is hard to be certain which is the lao-est, but Mr. Zhou thinks Dongyangjiang Wine, a liquor company from Zhejiang province, could be a strong contender. The company has been manning the stills since the Southern Song Dynasty (1127-1279). After China#39;s long civil war ended with a Communist victory in 1949, the state moved in to #39;protect#39; (i.e. nationalize) these venerable brands, said Mr. Zhou, and most of them remain state-owned. There is no reason why they have to be, though. Even Chinese E-Commerce giant Alibaba Group Holding Ltd., now gearing up for a stock exchange listing in the U.S., could become a Lao Zihao one day, Mr. Zhou said - though it would presumably need an exemption from the rule that requires a pre-1956 pedigree. #39;You can really look at the Lao Zihao as a symbol of China,#39; said Mr. Zhou. When high-ranking officials entertain foreign guests, they often choose Lao Zihao products as gifts, he said. That may explain why President Xi Jinping picked the otherwise undistinguished Qing-Feng Dumplings for a rare public appearance at the end of last year. But if you#39;re just dipping your toes into the world of Lao Zihao first the time, where should you start? CRT began its tour with dinner at this Peking duck restaurant, which opened its doors in 1416, when the Forbidden City was still under construction. Apart from such storied history, Bianyifang#39;s selling point is that its duck is cooked in a closed oven and-unlike ordinary roast ducks-never touches a naked flame. This is supposedly cleaner, but it#39;s a shame to miss out on that char-grilled edge that can make Peking duck such a treat.“中国实时报”栏目此行从这家北京烤鸭店的大餐开始。 On the positive side, diners at Bianyifang enjoy an exceptionally high pancake-to-duck ratio, so you#39;ll never reach that maddening moment when you run out of wrapping. And the 198 yuan () standard package, about right for two people, is a good deal compared with some of the other duck restaurants fleecing tourists in Beijing. For dessert, we checked into Huguosi, a bare-bones bakery and café that has branches throughout Beijing and is a favorite with the city#39;s working masses. Lao Zihao run the gamut from some of Beijing#39;s fanciest eateries to some of its most basic, and Huguosi is definitely at the latter end of the scale. At 3 yuan with free refills of sugar, Huguosi#39;s babao zhou (sweet porridge with rice and beans) may provide more calories per yuan than any other dish on sale in the capital. For bigger spenders, there are, of course, other options on the , including noodles, dumplings and a selection of pastries. It#39;s hard to quibble with a place like this. Simple, authentic and very, very cheap, what you see at Huguosi is exactly what you#39;re going to get. Having skimped on dessert, you can count up the change in your pocket and head out for some drinks. But if you pick the Beijing Hotel, a century-old complex a stone#39;s throw from Tiananmen Square, it might be best to stick to neat spirits. Sadly, you won#39;t get far on the hotel#39;s flat, watery cocktails. Seventy-five yuan seems a little steep for a Tom Collins that is really just a gin and water. A 15% service charge compounds the insult. The verdict: even Lao Zihao can be lousy sometimes. For more on Lao Zihao, check out CRT#39;s earlier, unforgettable experience at Beijing#39;s Qing-Feng Dumplings. /201405/296900

Food and nutrition are my burgeoning hobby interests, and recently I compiled some thoughts and articles into this:食物和营养是我近来非常感兴趣的主题,我汇集了一些想法,写成了如下的文章:There#39;s something to be said for eating fermented cabbage with spicy pepper paste and vinegar. At least, that#39;s what they say in Korea. Sound appealing? Judging from the amount of elementary school kids who show up to class with red flecks of leftover lunch in their teeth, it must be tasty, too. Can you imagine an 8-year-old American kid listing kimchi, spaghetti, and rice as his favorite food choices? Eric was excited to each a generous serving of sticky white rice, one chicken nugget, odeng, and a small serving of green kimchi with seaweed as well as noodles with meat sauce. /201407/313355
