A number of recent studies have revealed how making several small lifestyle changes could help you lose weight without feeling deprived of the food you love.1. USE A SMALLER PLATE A Cornell University study found that when a fixed portion of food was eaten from a large plate, diners felt they had been give a smaller than average portion, so ate more. When the same portion of food was eaten from a smaller dish, the meal seemed more substantial, so they ate less.2. USE A BIGGER FORK An Italian study into the relationship between fork size and consumption found that diners who used smaller forks ate more than those given larger forks. Researchers believe those with smaller forks felt they were making slower progress in satisfying their hunger, so ate more.3. EAT WITH MEN If you're a woman. According to psychologist Meredith Young, women eat less if there are men around. She told The Atlantic: "It is possible that small food portions signal attractiveness."4. READ THE LABELS Those who nutrition labels on food packaging eat around 5 per cent less fat than those who don't bother, according to researchers at the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center in Seattle.5. DRINK WATER BEFORE MEALS A 12-week study of 48 people aged between 55 and 75 on low-calorie diets found that those who drank two glasses of water before each meal lost an average of 4.5lb more than those that didn't.6. AVOID LIGHT AT NIGHT This includes late-night television and computer use. A study into the effects of bright light, dim light or darkness on weight-gain in mice found that those under a bright light at night gained 50 per cent more weight than those in darkness.7. HIDE UNHEALTHY TREATS Office workers eat less chocolate when dishes of candy were moved from their desks to the other side of the room, reveals a study by Mindless Eating author Brian Wansink.8. BE CAREFUL AROUND FRIENDS Children eat more with a friend than with a stranger, according to a study at the State University of New York at Buffalo. Researchers said that this trend, which applies to adults too, can be blamed on the fact that friends act as so-called permission-givers, and encourage one to indulge.9. BEWARE OF SKINNY FRIENDS WHO EAT A LOT Worse still, are thin friends who have large appetites. A study found that participants snacked more during a movie when accompanied by a skinny person who ate a lot, compared with those sitting next to a fat person who ate a lot.10. AVOID ADVERTISEMENTS FOR EXERCISE A study revealed that participants who were shown advertisements encouraging exercise ate more than those who weren't. The same was true of participants exposed to subliminal words relating to exercise during mealtimes. /201110/157262Just one in five Britons eats the recommended five portions of fruit and vegetables a day, a poll for World Cancer Research Fund (WCRF) suggests. The Department of Health first launched its five-a-day campaign in 2003. But the WCRF says its survey of more than 2, 000 UK adults shows people still find achieving that goal difficult. It is urging people to eat ;just one more portion; for a healthier diet, which would increase cancer protection.WCRF也正在劝说人们,为了健康饮食,至少能吃那五类中的一类,这样也能减少患癌症的风险。The YouGov survey for the WCRF found that, on average, 17% of lower income households (social groups C2, D and E) eat at least five portions per day, compared with 27% for those in higher income groups.WCRF的调查机构的调查发现,平均17%低收入家庭(生活在C2,D和E社区)每天都在吃这五类食物,相较于27%的高收入家庭。 Fruit and veg consumption levels were lowest in the north of England, where 18% had five or more portions daily. The highest levels of consumption were reported in the south of England, where 26% said they ate at least five portions. In London, it was 21%, in Scotland 22% and in Wales 23%. 23%。Kate Mendoza, head of education for the WCRF, said: ;These figures show that many people are still finding it difficult to follow the healthy eating message.WCRF的教育主管凯特·门多萨(Kate Mendoza)说,“这些信息表明还有很多的人很难遵从健康饮食信息。”;Getting at least five portions of fruit and vegetables a day is the building block of a healthy diet. Not only are fruit and veg a good source of nutrients, they also tend to be low in calories and full of fibre and so help us maintain a healthy weight.“每天吃至少这五类食物是健康饮食的基础,不仅水果和蔬菜作为一条好的营养渠道来源,而且它们还是低卡路里、富含纤维,能帮助我们保持相对健康的体重。;;A diet based on plant foods, such as wholegrains and pulses as well as fruit and vegetables, can reduce cancer risk as research shows they protect against a range of cancers. Recent research has confirmed that foods containing fibre reduce the risk of bowel cancer. “饮食是基于种植食物,比如大米、干豆,水果和蔬菜也是如此。通过这些食物,可以减少癌症风险,研究表明:这些食物可以防止大量癌症的发生,最近的研究还明含有纤维的食物可以减少肠癌的发病风险。”;Although people are more aware of the significance of eating five a day than they used to be, it is clear that there are still barriers to incorporating plant foods into our daily diets, ; she added. The charity is holding an awareness day, ;Fruity Friday;, on 18 May as part of Cancer Prevention Week.尽管现在的人们比过去更加的认识到每天吃这五类食物的重要性,但是要把这些种植食物融进我们的日常生活中,还有很多的障碍,” 凯特·门多萨补充到,“慈善机构已经在组织名为“鲜果星期五”宣传日,定于每年5月18日,作为癌症预防周的一部分。A Department of Health spokesperson said: ;We know we need to do more to encourage people to eat their five a day and help prevent diseases like cancer.一位健康部门的发言人说:“我知道我们还必须做更多的事来鼓励人们吃这五类食物,以此来预防像癌症这一类的疾病。”;That is why, through our Change4Life campaign, we invested around £10m last year on encouraging healthier lifestyles. This included things like the Supermeals campaign which promoted five a day by giving recipe ideas and money off fruit and vegetables in retail stores.;“这也是为什么我们改变生命方式的原因,上一年我们投入了大约一千万英镑的资金来鼓励健康的生活方式。这其中包括了比如我们的“超级饮食(Supermeals)”运动,我们通过在零售店分发食谱、给蔬菜水果打折,以此来促进每日五食的实施。; /201206/185874

Jan Fields, who started at McDonald's 33 years ago cooking fries and is now the fast food chain's U.S. president, was soon to turn 55 when, she says, "I woke up one day and said, "Oh my God, how did I gain this much weight?" 33年前简#8226;费尔茨加入麦当劳的时候还只是负责炸薯条,当她快要55岁那年,她已成为这个快餐连锁集团的美国总裁。她说,“有天醒来后我对自己说,‘天啊!我怎么变得这么胖了?’” Like millions of her customers at the 14,000 restaurants she oversees, Fields added her weight gradually--"10 pounds at a time: 10, 10, 10 and all of a sudden, I looked and I said, 'Oh, my God, I've gained 90 pounds. How did I ever do that?" 与她掌管的14,000家麦当劳连锁店的上百万顾客一样,费尔茨也是在不知不觉间长胖的——“每次10磅:10磅,10磅,10磅,然后突然间,我看了看自己,不禁惊呼,天哪,我重了90磅。我怎么长这么胖了?” Of course, McDonald's tops critics' hit list for compounding America's obesity epidemic, but Fields insists that her own culprit wasn't food but lack of exercise. "I didn't exercise," she confesses. "I worked all the time, went home and went to bed." 诚然,麦当劳一直是家们公认的美国肥胖问题的罪魁祸首,但是费尔茨坚持认为她本人发福的根源不是食物,而是缺乏锻炼。“我不怎么运动,”她承认,“整天除了上班,就是回家睡觉”。 Fields, No. 25 on Fortune's Most Powerful Women list, has always been easy to underestimate: The seventh of eight children raised in tiny Vincennes, Indiana, she grew up skinny and dreamed of being a nun, then a lawyer. But she met a guy, married young, had a daughter, and was driving to an interview for a secretarial job at a construction company when, at 23, she stopped at McDonald's for a Coke and spotted a "Now Hiring" sign. It was, in fact, the first time Fields ever ate in a McDonald's. She and her husband, who had enlisted in the Air Force, were so poor that they couldn't afford to eat out. Accepting a job on a whim and starting at .65 an hour, she went home that first night and cried -- "a disaster" until they moved her from cooking fries to serving customers at front counter. "Never quit over one thing or one person," she advises. Rising rapidly through the ranks, she was propelled by a remarkable discipline and a down-home, inspirational leadership style. 由于一时心血来潮,她接受了麦当劳的工作,时薪2.65美元。上班第一天晚上回到家,她大哭一场——“糟透了”。后来公司把她从煎炸部调到了前台做。“不要因为某件事或某个人而放弃,”她说。由于在工作上恪尽职守,在领导风格上平易近人,励精图治,她在公司一路平步青云。 /201108/149468

Amazing news for lazy people; sleep makes you smarter. Not studying, ing or revising, just sleeping, although the other three won’t hurt either. A joint study conducted by Harvard Medical School and the University of Pennsylvania found that shut-eye enhances your ability to recall recently learned memories, even when those memories are challenged hours later by new information.Head researcher Dr Jeffery Ellenbogen says: “This shows us that sleep does not just passively protect memories, but rather, plays an active role in memory consolidation. Taking a stimulant to stay awake can help with alertness in the short term, but people really need sleep to retain knowledge and brain function at their best.” Scientists at Stanford University have suggested that a more supportive pillow can reduce the breathing difficulties that can interrupt your snoozing, so a clever, memory foam pillow will let you sleep soundly enough to sound clever the next day. /200901/60651
