Apple#39;s chief executive, Tim Cook, has said he is ;extremely sorry for the frustration; users have found with its new mapping service, adding that if they are dissatisfied they can use rival products. The dramatic move by Cook follows growing complaints about the quality of the data offered by the new Maps app which was introduced with iOS 6, the newest version of the mobile software powering the iPhone and iPad. ;We are doing everything we can to make Maps better,; Cook wrote in a letter posted on Apple#39;s site – a method frequently used by Cook#39;s predecessor Steve Jobs to issue messages when Apple was facing criticism.“我们将采取一切可能的举措,使地图务变得更好,”,库克在苹果网上的致歉信中写道,——库克的前任史蒂夫#8226;乔布斯经常使用的方法,即当苹果公司面临批评时他就发布信息。Apple has apologised in the past for errors – though sometimes grudgingly. Cook says in the letter that ;we wanted to provide our customers with even better Maps including features such as turn-by-turn directions, voice integration, [satellite view] Flyover and vector-based maps [which store data in a single file rather than needing repeated downloads to work]. In order to do this, we had to create a new version of Maps from the ground up.;库克在信中说:“我们希望向用户提供更好的地图务,包括按方向导航、语音和俯瞰视图(Flyover)功能,并引入矢量地图数据。 Although iOS 6 was only released formally on 19 September, Cook says there are now more than 100m devices using it with the new Apple Maps, ;with more and more joining us every day.; He said that users ;have aly searched for nearly half a billion locations; and that such feedback will improve the quality. Unusually, Cook recommends that users who are dissatisfied with Apple#39;s offering should try rival services. These include apps by MapQuest, Waze and Microsoft#39;s Bing, or maps from Google and Nokia via web browsers. However, Google#39;s executive chairman, Eric Schmidt, indicated earlier this week that the search giant is not presently developing an app for iOS. #39;#39;What were we going to do, force (Apple) to include the software?; Schmidt said in Tokyo on Monday, adding that Google has no plans at present to complete its iOS Google Maps app and submit it to Apple. That decision lies with Apple, Schmidt said.“我们应该做的难道是迫使苹果兼容我们的软件吗?” #39;#39;We think it would have been better if they had kept ours. But what do I know?; he added.“我们认为如果苹果运用我们的软件这将会更好。 /201209/202301

Google yesterday became the first large online ad network to charge clients only if their adverts have been seen, in a radical shake-up of pricing that affects more than 2m sites in its display advertising network. “If you are an advertiser and a human being didn’t see your ad, then frankly nothing else matters,” said Neal Mohan, Google’s vice-president of display advertising products. 如果没人看你的广告,广告商为什么要付钱?”“If you are a marketer, why pay if a human being did not see the ad?”“广告没被看到的问题”,一直以来都在困扰着总值达1170亿美元的全球在线广告业。The problem of adverts that do not get seen has plagued the 7bn global online advertising industry. It is estimated that as many as half of the digital ads that marketers buy are not seen at all, with a large portion only being viewed if a website user scrolls all the way down to the bottom of a web page. Despite explosive growth rates, digital advertising still accounts for about only a fifth of the overall spending on marketing, and Mr Mohan said helping marketers measure the effectiveness of ad campaigns would secure more spending. This problem is also shared by television adverts. On TV, marketers can track whether an ad is shown but it is difficult to find out whether or not someone actually saw a commercial or ran to the kitchen for a snack. To develop its new product, Google used an emerging industry benchmark that only considers an ad “viewable” if more than 50 per cent of it is visible on the screen for one second or longer. Google developed its own technologies to detect not only whether an ad is visible but also what portion of it can be seen on the screen. Google would not comment on what portion of ads on its networks are not “viewable” but noted that prices are likely to rise as the supply of ad inventory is constricted by the ruling out of “non-viewable” ads. /201312/268706

After decades living in the shadow of the West Coast’s more numerous and wealthier geeks, 2013 was the year New York City’s tech start-up community really found its swagger. Backing from City Hall and the metropolis’s first billion-dollar deal – Yahoo’s acquisition of Tumblr – built on several years of momentum to create a start-up community that is hoping to make up for what it lacks in deep technical capability with cultural and industrial diversity. Tumblr。Some Silicon Valley luminaries are aly starting to see New York as a better place to build tech start-ups – among other local perks. Sean Parker, the Napster founder and first president of Facebook, railed against Silicon Valley’s “echo chamber” when he hosted the Founders Forum event for entrepreneurs in New York this October. “New York feels more normal to me. Silicon Valley feels totally in the clouds,” he said. “There is something so all-consuming about the tech world in San Francisco and it’s inescapable#8201;.#8201;.#8201;.#8201;If you are building a consumer internet company in particular, you need to have a people-centric perspective.”“我觉得纽约更正常一点。 Technical capabilities are not Mr Parker’s only concern. “Your engineers here have less sexual frustration [in New York]. It’s a major point – they are happier people,” he said to nervous laughs from the assembled entrepreneurs. “In New York engineers go out and get laid and have fun.”“你们这里(指纽约)的工程师会少一些性压抑。 While Silicon Valley retains a dominant share of US tech deals, New York’s has been growing steadily (see chart), even though most of that funding was for early stage companies, suggesting the community will take some time to build real scale. “While still smaller than Silicon Valley, New York looks to be the only market with enough momentum to eventually (in the medium to long term) overtake Silicon Valley as a venture capital hub,” say analysts at CB Insights, a research consultancy. Rather than trying to out-geek Silicon Valley, New York entrepreneurs and investors say it can succeed as a tech hub because it sits alongside so many other sizeable industries, from finance and real estate to fashion and media, rather than just tech. After completing the Y Combinator accelerator programme in Silicon Valley in 2011, the founders of Codecademy, a site that teaches computer programming, moved back to New York.2011年在硅谷参加完Y Combinator创业孵化器项目后,Codecademy网站的创始人们回到了纽约,该网站教授电脑编程技能。“One of the primary considerations was that we aren’t designing a product for people in San Francisco,” says Zach Sims, chief executive of Codecademy, which now has 22 staff in New York. “As we try to build a product for a mainstream audience, it helps to be around mainstream people. Being surrounded with people from other industries allowed us to test our product.”“我们主要考虑的一个问题是,我们不是为旧金山人设计产品的,”Codecademy首席执行官扎克#8226;西姆斯(Zach Sims)表示,“我们正努力为主流用户设计产品,因此生活在主流人群中是有帮助的。 However, more of the traffic still goes the other way. The creators of photo app Frontback, backed by prominent New York investor Betaworks, moved from Brooklyn to San Francisco this autumn, for example, because its founders felt it was more likely to have longer-term success there. While Tumblr has remained in New York after its takeover, Yahoo’s buyout of the blogging site suggests that, like many up-and-coming start-up communities, the biggest “successes” are acquired by Silicon Valley giants rather than breaking out on their own. Some say that could change next year, with some online retailers such as Etsy, a marketplace for craft or handmade goods, and Rent the Runway, a members’ site that rents out designer dresses, tipped as potential IPO candidates. IPO。But other one-time darlings of New York’s online retail market have struggled to maintain momentum. Fab.com, which sells designer homewares, and Gilt Groupe, a luxury goods vendor, both suffered from consumer fatigue of Groupon-style flash sales sites, leading to staff cuts and management changes in the past six months. New York may have more sex appeal than the “monoculture” of Silicon Valley, but despite the recent progress of its tech community, Silicon Valley’s focus still seems to trump New York’s diversity when it comes to creating a sustained stream of local successes. /201401/272917

After getting his M.B.A. from the College of William and Mary, Chris Perry knew he#39;d have to venture beyond Williamsburg, Va., to find a good job in marketing and branding. The best jobs in his field are in big cities like New York, and industry recruiters weren#39;t coming to his university. So, through the career website LinkedIn he started reaching out to people who worked at companies that he had an interest in. His first few introductions didn#39;t get much response. Mr. Perry acknowledges that his notes were cordial but may have sounded too self-serving. So he softened his approach. #39;I#39;d put in the title that I was a recent M.B.A. graduate looking for advice, #39; says Mr. Perry. #39;I#39;d focus on talking about them during informational interviews and I#39;d mention any accomplishments of theirs that I may have about.#39;佩里说,我会在标题中写上,我是一名刚毕业的MBA学生,希望获得您的建议。 He also participated in LinkedIn industry groups that allowed him to communicate directly with contacts he couldn#39;t have reached without a chain of introductions. One fellow group member worked for Reckitt Benckiser, a British consumer-goods company with a major office in Parsippany, N.J. The contact agreed to speak with Mr. Perry on condition that he not ask for a reference. After a pleasant conversation, the contact ended up forwarding Mr. Perry#39;s résumé to the HR department, which helped him get an interview and a job. He#39;s now a senior leader on Reckitt#39;s e-commerce team. Social-media websites like LinkedIn have made job hunting easier by automating many tasks. But one-click networking invitations fall short when trying to reach people, say experts. Instead, job hunters need to engage other professionals on a more personal level. This includes getting introductions to people outside of your network who can help you with your career. The trick is knowing how to ask. Focus on your first- and second-degree connections. The former are contacts that have aly accepted your invitation to join your network, or vice versa, and the latter are contacts known to your first-degree connection. Third-degree connections require more than one introduction and can be difficult to reach, as you may not have a mutual acquaintance. Consider whom you want to get an introduction from. Do research on LinkedIn, Google and even Glassdoor to find out what kind of employee your chosen first-degree contact is, says Dan Schawbel, a workplace expert from Boston and author of #39;Promote Yourself: The New Rules of Career Success.#39;波士顿职场专家施瓦贝尔(Dan Schawbel)说,考虑一下你想获得谁的引荐,在LinkedIn、谷歌(Google),甚至是Glassdoor上查出你选择的第一级联系人是哪种员工。施瓦贝尔著有《提升自己:职场成功的新规则》(Promote Yourself: The New Rules of Career Success)一书。#39;You really don#39;t want an endorsement from somebody that#39;s not liked at work or who has a poor workplace reputation, #39; says Mr. Schawbel. #39;How much do you really know about that person that you connected with at that trade show?#39;施瓦贝尔说,你肯定不想被在职场不受欢迎或者名声不好的人引荐,对于在那次展会认识的联系人你真正了解多少?When asking for an introduction, make it easy for your first-degree contact by mentioning how you#39;d like to be introduced and the reasons you need help, writing out the introduction to be forwarded and providing something in return for the effort. Networking works best when both parties can offer the other something useful. You should also give your contact an easy way out in case he or she isn#39;t comfortable making the introduction, says New York career coach Melissa Llarena. #39;Always be gracious, since at the very least they might offer useful advice or a referral to somebody else that can help you with an introduction, #39; she says. Groups are one way to contact second- and third-degree LinkedIn members directly. But don#39;t join a group and start contacting individual members without making an earnest attempt to participate in community dialogue. You could get ejected from the group by the moderators. Answer some questions and start new topics. Go beyond #39;liking#39; updates by making thoughtful comments on new posts or by sharing relevant links. You want to show regular engagement, says Mr. Schawbel. That includes answering any network requests promptly. Preface any requests with regular status updates to show that you#39;re active. It will also give you and your contact something to reference. Just don#39;t share the same personal updates about your cats across all of your social-media accounts. Try to keep your LinkedIn updates on a more professional level. You#39;ll get a much better response if your profile is up-to-date and includes a photo. That includes making your profile relevant to the job that you want to get, says Ms. Llarena. Once you#39;ve established a regular dialogue, take the relationship offline as soon as you can. Ask for 30 minutes and treat your contact to coffee or lunch. /201311/263578
