Hold your hand out and try to keep it perfectly still. After a moment, it will probably begin to shake. Hold that same hand out just before you give a major presentation to your new boss, and youll notice that those normal small tremors increase substantially. Why? The answer has to do with how nervous feelings influence a response cycle between two parts of your brain. These parts are called the basal ganglia and the cortex. In order for your brain to control the steadiness of your hand, the cortex and the basal ganglia exchange signals with each other. First, the cortex sends a signal to the basal ganglia; the basal ganglia, in turn, responds returning a signal to the cortex. These signals are the basis of motor control. By exchanging signals, the cortex and the basal ganglia allow your hand muscles to hold their position. This cycle of signals repeats continuously the entire time your hand is extended. 201501/354868The next time youre at a park, watch children playing on a merry-go-round and youll notice that kids sitting in the center of the merry-go-round dont get as dizzy as those hanging on the edge. Thats because the inner ear helps you keep your balance, and when your inner ear is disturbed by a force such as spinning, you feel dizzy. Kids on the edge of the merry-go-round are experiencing greater force, and therefore are getting dizzier, than those at the center. Heres why. Physics tells us that objects at rest want to stay at rest, and those in motion want to stay in motion, and when these objects are in motion, they naturally move in a straight line. To get an object to move in anything other than a straight line, you have to exert force on it. A force is required for an object to move in a circle, as is the case with a merry-go-round. This force is called a centripetal force. 201501/355799Rudolph the reindeer is best known for his brightly colored rednose. For other reindeer, however, the most colorful thingabout them is actually their eyes. Researchers have found thatdepending on the season, the eyes of Arctic reindeer change from gold to blue. Like many mammals, Arctic reindeer have a structure in the eye called the tapetum lucidum, TL forshort. TL。It sits behind the retina and reflects light back to increase the sensitivity of night vision. The TL is also responsible for reindeer eye color changes. During the Arctic summer, when its always light outside, reindeer TL is gold-a color that reflectsmore light back through the retina, better enabling reindeer to see in daylight. (This is why, by theway, many mammals have gold colored eyes.)(顺便说一句,这也是为什么许多哺乳类动物的眼睛是金色。)But when the Arctic winter sets in and darkness reigns, the TL turns blue. The result of this is lesslight reflecting back out through the retina, making it easier for the animals to see predators in dim conditions. The color change may be caused by shifting pressure in reindeer eyes, which stems from constantpupil dilation. When compressed, the TL reflects shorter wave lengths of blue light which are moreplentiful during Arctic winters. /201501/352315The next time youre at a park, watch children playing on a merry-go-round and youll notice that kids sitting in the center of the merry-go-round dont get as dizzy as those hanging on the edge.

A master forgers works are auctioned伪造大师的作品竟然被拍卖THE sale of more than 200 drawings on October 22nd by a small auction house near Salisbury in south-west England has threatened to open old wounds in the art world. The works were by Eric Hebborn, a master forger.10月22日,英格兰西南部的索尔兹伯里市的一家小拍卖行售出了200多幅画,再次揭开了艺术界尘封多年的伤口—这些作品都出自赝品画大师赫伯恩之手。Few have heard of Hebborn, but many museum-goers may have seen his handiwork, masquerading as old masters at major galleries around the world. He claimed his forgeries found homes in the worlds most famous museums, though some friends, and enemies, disputed this. Some in the art world fear that the newly auctioned sketches, collected by his sister after he was murdered in Rome in 1996, could prove to be preliminary drawings which would reveal other major fakes. “This auction is going to open a very large can of worms,” says Simon Wingett, who auctioned Hebborns works at Webbs of Wilton this week. Born into a working-class London family in 1934, Hebborn won prizes as a student at the Royal Academy, but his own art brought him little acclaim, leading to suggestions that forgery was his means of revenge on a snooty art elite. Hebborn maintained that dealers were interested in money not art, claiming one paid him £750 for a forgery that he sold on for £90,000. As for art historians, “they just want to get a knighthood for knowing a lot about Rembrandt”. Art itself was neglected, he believed. He dismissed claims he was a crook, saying he, like many before him, simply made imitations. He is thought to have produced about 1,000 forgeries over the course of his life, sold on by bamboozled dealers as the work of Rubens, Van Dyck, Brueghel and others. In 1978, a curator at the National Gallery of Art in Washington, DC, noticed that two drawings purchased from Colnaghi, a reputable dealer in London, were on the same kind of paper. The dealer admitted to having been duped, and prices on the London market for master drawings fell. In 1984 Hebborn confessed to having forged them and others. But he was never charged; the dealers and experts were too worried about rocking the market and exposing their own ignorance. Though few people could tell the difference between his forgeries and the originals, there remains a difference in price. At Sothebys in New York earlier this year, a painting by Brueghel fetched .2m. Hebborns most expensive sketch this week went for £2,600.

Interest rates do not seem to affect investment as economists assume利率似乎并不像经济学家假设的那样影响投资IT IS Economics 101. If central bankers want to spur economic activity, they cut interest rates. If they want to dampen it, they raise them. The assumption is that, as it becomes cheaper or more expensive for businesses and households to borrow, they will adjust their spending accordingly. But for businesses in America, at least, a newstudy* suggests that the accepted wisdom on monetary policy is broadly (but not entirely) wrong. Using data stretching back to 1952, the paper concludes that market interest rates, which central banks aim to influence when they set their policy rates, play some role in how much firms invest, but not much. Other factors—most notably how profitable a firm is and how well its shares do—are far more important (see chart). A government that wants to pep up the economy, says S.P. Kothari of the Sloan School of Management, one of the authors, would have more luck with other measures, such as lower taxes or less onerous regulation. Establishing what drives business investment is difficult, not least because it expands and contracts far more dramatically than the economy as a whole. These shifts were particularly manic in the late 1950s (both up and down), mid-1960s (up), and 2000s (down, up, then down again). Overall, investment has been in slight decline since the early 1980s. Having sifted through decades of data, however, the authors conclude that neither volatility in the financial markets nor credit-default swaps, a measure of corporate credit risk that tends to influence the rates firms pay, has much impact. In fact, investment often rises when interest rates go up and volatility increases. Investment grows most quickly, though, in response to a surge in profits and drops with bad news. These ups and downs suggest shifts in investment go too far and are often ill-timed. At any rate, they do little good: big cuts can substantially boost profits, but only briefly; big increases in investment slightly decrease profits. Companies, Mr Kothari says, tend to dwell too much on recent experience when deciding how much to invest and too little on how changing circumstances may affect future returns. This is particularly true in difficult times. Appealing opportunities may exist, and they may be all the more attractive because of low interest rates. That should matter—but the data suggest it does not.
