World's costliest cities Moscow tops the list, while American cities drop on Mercers' 'Worldwide Cost of Living' survey for 2008.A new survey finds Moscow is the most expensive city to live in for the third year in a row. This has the ruble strengthen against other currencies. Tokyo, it moved up two spots to second place. That pushed London down to third place and Oslo it jumped six spots to fourth, Seoul South Korea it rounded out the top five. Now the top ten European and Asian cities actually led the pack. The latest annual survey by research firm Mercer measures the cost of living for expatriates in 143 cities in countries on six continents. The trend this year shows the gap between the most expensive cities in the world and the least expensive, it actually appears to be widening. As far as American cities on the list New York is still the most costly city in the ed States, but it comes in at No. 22 on the global list. Los Angeles clocks in at No. 55, Miami No. 75, while Washington D.C. fell a whopping 22 places to 107th. The soft of US dollar led to an overall drop in the cost of living in 19 American cities compared to other major cities around the globe. For the six years in a row Asuncion Paraguay, it is the cheapest city to live in. On a previous show we discussed how, every 200,000 years or so, the north and south poles switch places. Not that the places themselves move—rather, the entire magnetic field of the earth flips around, resulting in the pole we now call “north” being on the southern tip of the planet, and vice versa. Why does this happen? Although it seems pretty solid, the outer core of our planet is in a molten state. That means it’s partway between what most folks would call liquid and solid. Much of this molten interior is iron and nickel. These are elements that conduct electricity very well. It’s the fluid metals that move about inside earth that generate a magnetic field around our entire planet. Although from close up these metals are bubbling like hot soup, you could also say that in general their motions follow a pretty steady pattern. That’s why the magnetic field on earth is pretty stable.【生词注释】switch v. 内部close up n. 201111/160149

In the first meeting where I saw Steve Jobs he was rushing around madly, trying to listen in on every one of those conversations that was going on simultaneously. He had a real intensity to his demeanor.Jobs imagined a machine for people, and he sensed he was the man to make it happen. The two Steves found an investor, and formed Apple Computer inc.The name apple, the friendly shape, the friendly advertizing we did , Steve was a genius at marketing that it helped bring this whole category of device to the world.Apple I morphed into Apple II which went further, it was faster and had text display, color graphics and its own plastic casing. It was the first personal computer that a human being, a normal human being, a non-technically oriented human being could use.I think Steve Jobs knew that he was on to something big, real big.

A special report on the future of the state国家未来的特别报告Go East, young bureaucrat向东方学习做官吧!Emerging Asia can teach the West a lot about government新兴的亚州可以教给西方很多关于政府管理的道理WHEN people talk about Singapore’s education miracle, they normally think of rows of clever young mathematicians. The hair-design and beauty-therapy training centres at the Institute of Technical Education (ITE) are rather different. The walls are covered with pouting models, L’Oréal adverts and television screens. There is a fully fitted-out spa and a hairdressing salon. It all seems rather more “Sex and the City” than Asian values, though the manicurists, pedicurists, cosmetologists and hairdressers toil diligently. Asked whether he wants to go to university, the holy grail of most Asian families, a young barber called Noel replies that he would rather open a hairdressing salon. Mei Lien wants to set up her own beauty salon; Shuner would like to work in hotels abroad. Until recently ITE—dubbed “It’s The End” by ambitious middle-class parents—was the dark side of Singaporean education. The city state streams pupils rigorously and is unashamedly elitist: one school claims to send more students to Ivy League universities than any other secondary school in the world. But such a system also produces losers—and many of the bottom third who do not make it to university come to ITE. Since the 1990s the government has worked hard to change ITE’s image. It has not only spent a lot of money on new facilities and better teachers but also put a great deal of thought into it, scouring the West for best practice in vocational training. And it has encouraged students who are used to failure to take pride in their work. That has involved discipline (a list displays the names of class-shirkers) but also fun outside the classroom: ITE has sports teams and concerts just like any university. 201104/131778

Reaction to President Barack Obama's speech on the Middle East has prompted some initial mixed reactions in Egypt. While plans for economic and development aid are being welcomed, hopes for a more consistent stand on regional unrest and a new approach to the Palestinian-Israeli conflict were largely dashed. The promise of aid, in the form of debt relief and loan guarantees, is helping allay some fears in Egypt and Tunisia. Popular uprisings in the two nations succeeded in toppling the old governments, but at a cost. The economic situation has become very dire, particularly on the financial front. There is a big financing gap and this needs to be closed right away. So I think any amount of money and any opportunity to have access to cash would help this situation immensely," said Magda Kandil, director of the Egyptian Center for Economic Studies. Both Tunisia and Egypt have been hard hit by a drop in tourist revenue. In Egypt, remittance earnings are down after more than a million of its workers fled the conflict in neighboring Libya. General uncertainty has kept foreign investment at bay and led to hoarding of key commodities at home - all elements that put the chances of a peaceful transition at risk. Economist Kandil says that the way the economic assistance has been structured will help. "I think the beauty about the debt forgiveness is that it starts in the form of debt swap, which means that the money will not be just loose cash that the government can do whatever it wants to do with it," he said. 201105/137358
