Motorola's great divide Under pressure from activist investor Carl Icahn, the company separates its mobile handset businessBearking up is hard to do. Splitting up might be a little easier, especially if your company is facing intense pressure from a billionaire shareholder activist. That's the story this morning at Motorola, the giant cellphone manufacturer. The company is saying this morning that it'll separate its struggling handset unit from its other operations. The move might be a response to pressure from activist investor, Carl Icahn.Icanhn owns nearly 6.5% of Motorola, and has been pressuring the company for quite sometime to split off that business. He's also sued Motorola this week in an attempt to investigate the company's strategy for improving its business, especially its handset business. Now sales of Motorola phones fell 38% in the fourth quarter of 2007, while nearly all of Motorola's competitors saw gains during that period. Icanhn has been seeking four seats on Motorola's board and as of Tuesday the company offered Icanhn's investment firm two board seats, which Icanhn flatly rejected. Since Icanhn began agitating for a change at Motorola, several executives have stepped down from the company, including former CEO Ed. Zander, shares of Motorola are down 45% in the past year.As for how the split will work, well, one business will focus exclusively on cellphone handsets, including Motorola's popular RAZR model, that business has been struggling due to market saturation, and competition from other players, including Apple with its Iphone ,also Nokia and Research Emotion with the Blackberry. The other business will focus on the fastest growing parts of Motorola's business, including network equipment, cable TV set top boxes, and also two-way radios. We'll keep an eye on shares of Motorola for you throughout the day. And the wait for the signature ride, the Forbidden Journey, reached at least 90 minutes, at one point."It was worth it, just because I'm a Harry Potter fanatic," said Kelsey Rigg, 18, a British transplant to Florida who at 3 am joined a crowd of several hundred people.Universal executives did not immediately have information about crowd size. The 20-acre Harry Potter park reportedly cost 0 million to build and recreates the Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry and other places dreamed up by author J.K. IT WAS always going to be a hard act to follow. On October 4th Apple staged a press conference to launch its latest iPhone and other gadgets. Tim Cook, the computing giant’s new chief executive, and his colleagues did a perfectly competent job of presenting its latest wares. But it was inevitable that comparisons would be drawn between Mr Cook’s understated approach on stage and that of Steve Jobs, his predecessor, whose sense of showmanship had turned so many Apple product launches into quasi-religious experiences. The news the following day that Mr Jobs had finally died following a long battle with cancer turned the feeling of disappointment into one of deep sadness. Many technologists have been hailed as visionaries. If anyone deserves that title it was Mr Jobs. Back in the 1970s, the notion that computers might soon become ubiquitous seemed fanciful. In those days of green-on-black displays, when floppy discs were still floppy, he was among the first to appreciate the potential that lay in the idea of selling computers to ordinary people. More recently, under his guidance,Apple went from being a company on the brink of bankruptcy to a firm that has reshaped entire industries and brought rivals to their knees. Rarely incorporate history has a transformation been so swift. Along the way Mr Jobs also co-founded Pixar, an animation company, and became Disney’s biggest shareholder. Few corporate leaders in modern times have been as dominant—or, at times, as dictatorial—as Mr Jobs. His success was the result of his unusual combination of technical smarts, strategic vision, flair for design and sheer force of character. But it was also because in an industry dominated by engineers and marketing people who often seem to come from different planets, he had a different and much broader perspective. Mr Jobs had an unusual knack for looking at technology from the outside, as a user, not just from the inside, as an engineer—something he attributed to the experiences of his wayward youth. An adopted child, Mr Jobs caught the computing bug while growing up in Silicon Valley. As a teenager in the late 1960s he cold-called his idol, Bill Hewlett, and talked his way into a summer job at Hewlett-Packard (HP), where he met Steve Wozniak (pictured above with Mr Jobs). But it was only after dropping out of college, travelling to India, becoming a Buddhist and experimenting with psychedelic drugs that Mr Jobs returned to California to co-found Apple with Mr Wozniak, in his parents’ garage, on April Fools’ Day 1976. “A lot of people in our industry haven’t had very diverse experiences,” he once said. “So they don’t have enough dots to connect, and they end up with very linear solutions.”His great rival, Bill Gates, he suggested, would be “a broader guy if he had dropped acid once or gone off to an ashram when he was younger.” 在惠普,他遇到了Steve Wozniak(上图与乔布斯合影者)。 One size does not fit all. That's the philosophy behind an innovative approach to primary education which started in Britain less than a decade ago.The International Primary Curriculum (IPC) is now taught in more than 1,000 primary schools in 58 countries, including the ed States. The curriculum personalizes education and applies an internationally-minded approach to learning. Alison Kerr is a second grade teacher in the British American School of Los Angeles, one of a few American private schools that teaches the International Primary Curriculum. She says the main goal of the curriculum is to engage children in the learning process. This term, for example, her class is learning about historical figures. I got the children to come in secret and dress up with several clues of a famous person. They had to research and bring us 10 written clues and the rest of the class had to guess who these significant people were," says Kerr. "So the children do not simply do the same thing, the same work, sheet type of format every single time." Educator Martin Skelton, who co-authored the IPC eight years ago, says kids need a program that allows them to learn individually. Our view is the teachers should be thinking about their kid in their class and why they are not learning and trying to work out what they are going to be doing tomorrow to help individual kids learn much better," says Skelton, who adds that another important goal is preparing today’s children to become 21st century leaders. "Most of world problems are going to be solved internationally now. I mean no single country is going to solve the environment or terrorism. It’s a multi co-operational activity."

"I was also curious about how to share the stories that kids have told me for the last several years that I’ve never been able to share in non-fiction because it would reveal who they were or where they come from." The story opens as Charlie, 13, leaves middle school - and some bad experiences - behind her. Charlie’s friends bully another girl during a school trip and Charlie tries to stay out of it. They get roomed together and Charlie’s two other friends start to become incredibly mean to Nidhi because they wanted to invite boys to the room and Nidhi says you know, ‘No way.’ It gets really bad and Charlie does nothing," says Wiseman. "Her neutral stance doesn’t really look neutral. It looks like she is siding with the girls who were being mean and racist." 201102/125316 The internet in China中国互联网Bashing Baidu打击百度State television fires on China’s Google国有电视台向中国谷歌开火Aug 27th 2011 | from the print editionLAST year Google remembered its motto (“Don’t be evil”) and stopped co-operating with China’s censors. Since then, Google has found it much harder to do business in mainland China. The chief beneficiary was Baidu, China’s leading search engine. Its share of internet searches, aly vast, grew to a dominant 75%. 75%。Robin Li, Baidu’s Chinese-born, American-educated co-founder, is only 42 but one of China’s richest men. That makes him a target, despite his scrupulous efforts not to upset the ruling Communist Party. Since August 14th Baidu has been the subject of a series of damning investigative reports on CCTV, the main state-run broadcaster. Using undercover cameras, CCTV exposed Baidu employees apparently helping firms circumvent laws that bar unlicensed companies from advertising online. The reports also suggested that the lack of transparency in Baidu’s advertising system could lead advertisers to overpay. A Baidu spokesman refused to comment. It was not the first time that CCTV has bashed Baidu. Reports in 2008 made similar allegations, prompting Baidu to apologise publicly. The latest attacks go further, though. It might seem a bit rich for the state broadcaster of a secretive, authoritarian country to chide Baidu for murkiness. And it certainly surprises some China-watchers. Baidu has done all it can to comply with the government’s whims. It is also a national champion: its shares are listed on New York’s NASDAQ exchange, and foreigners can’t get enough of them.
