The escape of the Brazilian boa constrictor earned Harry his longest-ever punishment. By the time he was allowed out of his cupboard again, the summer holidays had started and Dudley had aly broken his new camera, crashed his remote control airplane, and, first time out on his racing bike, knocked down old Mrs. Figg as she crossed Privet Drive on her crutches. Harry was glad school was over, but there was no escaping Dudley#39;s gang, who visited the house every single day. Piers, Dennis, Malcolm, and Gordon were all big and stupid, but as Dudley was the biggest and stupidest of the lot, he was the leader. The rest of them were all quite happy to join in Dudley#39;s favorite sport: Harry Hunting. This was why Harry spent as much time as possible out of the house, wandering around and thinking about the end of the holidays, where he could see a tiny ray of hope. When September came he would be going off to secondary school and, for the first time in his life, he wouldn#39;t be with Dudley. Dudley had been accepted at Uncle Vernon#39;s old private school, Smeltings. Piers Polkiss was going there too. Harry, on the other hand, was going to Stonewall High, the local public school. Dudley thought this was very funny. ;They stuff people#39;s heads down the toilet the first day at Stonewall,; he told Harry. ;Want to come upstairs and practice?; ;No, thanks,; said Harry. ;The poor toilet#39;s never had anything as horrible as your head down it ; it might be sick.; Then he ran, before Dudley could work out what he#39;d said. One day in July, Aunt Petunia took Dudley to London to buy his Smeltings uniform, leaving Harry at Mrs. Figg#39;s. Mrs. Figg wasn#39;t as bad as usual. It turned out she#39;d broken her leg tripping over one of her cats, and she didn#39;t seem quite as fond of them as before. She let Harry watch television and gave him a bit of chocolate cake that tasted as though she#39;d had it for several years. That evening, Dudley paraded around the living room for the family in his brand-new uniform. Smeltings#39; boys wore maroon tailcoats, orange knickerbockers, and flat straw hats called boaters. They also carried knobbly sticks, used for hitting each other while the teachers weren#39;t looking. This was supposed to be good training for later life. As he looked at Dudley in his new knickerbockers, Uncle Vernon said gruffly that it was the proudest moment of his life. Aunt Petunia burst into tears and said she couldn#39;t believe it was her Ickle Dudleykins, he looked so handsome and grown-up. Harry didn#39;t trust himself to speak. He thought two of his ribs might aly have cracked from trying not to laugh.“遗憾得很,你竟会跟我说这种话;你怎么不早说呢?要是今天上午听到你这样说,那我当然不会去拜访他啦。这真叫不凑巧。现在既然拜访也拜访过了,我们今后就少不了要结交这个朋友。” "I honour your circumspection. A fortnight's acquaintance is certainly very little. One cannot know what a man really is by the end of a fortnight. But if WE do not venture somebody else will; and after all, Mrs. Long and her daughters must stand their chance; and, therefore, as she will think it an act of kindness, if you decline the office, I will take it on myself. " The girls stared at their father. Mrs. Bennet said only, "Nonsense, nonsense!" "What can be the meaning of that emphatic exclamation?" cried he. "Do you consider the forms of introduction, and the stress that is laid on them, as nonsense? I cannot quite agree with you THERE. What say you, Mary? For you are a young lady of deep reflection, I know, and great books and make extracts. " Mary wished to say something sensible, but knew not how. "While Mary is adjusting her ideas, " he continued, "let us return to Mr. Bingley. " "I am sick of Mr. Bingley, " cried his wife. "I am sorry to hear THAT; but why did not you tell me that before? If I had known as much this morning I certainly would not have called on him. It is very unlucky; but as I have actually paid the visit, we cannot escape the acquaintance now. " Article/201011/118699Cliff was on the phone. “I couldn’t believe it! It was broad daylight! These criminals have no conscience, no morals. They beat up and rob old people. They kidnap and rape young women. It’s getting to the point where no one is safe anytime or anywhere.” Cliff’s wife had recently been punched, kicked, and robbed on a warm, sunny day. She had a black eye, sore ribs, and abrasions on her left elbow where she had been knocked to the pavement.Janelle had gone to Santa Anita mall to buy a new pair of shoes. JC Penney was having a sale. As usual, the huge parking lot was crowded. The nearest parking spot she could find was almost 100 yards past the mall’s north entrance. She got out of her car and started walking south toward JC Penney, the mall’s northernmost anchor store. She had only walked about 20 feet when she heard something behind her. She turned around. A hooded figure got out of the passenger side of a black Mustang. He walked right up to her. She clutched her purse. He punched her. She fell to the pavement, stunned. The man grabbed her purse. She held tight, until he kicked her in her side. She screamed in pain and let go of her purse. The man yelled something at her and got back into the Mustang. She heard laughter as it drove off.A minute later, another car pulled up. A woman got out and asked Janelle what was wrong. Janelle was crying. The woman called the police, and helped Janelle to her feet. A police car arrived about 10 minutes later. The officer called for an ambulance, but Janelle said to forget it. She knew that most Los Angeles area hospitals were usually overcrowded with emergency room patients. Even if the ambulance managed to find a hospital that wasn’t too overcrowded, she would have to wait hours before an emergency room doctor would see her and treat her. I could go online and learn how to treat myself by then, or maybe even be completely healed, Janelle thought. Article/201105/138576Something very painful was going on in Harry#39;s mind. As Hagrid#39;s story came to a close, he saw again the blinding flash of green light, more clearly than he had ever remembered it before ; and he remembered something else, for the first time in his life: a high, cold, cruel laugh. Hagrid was watching him sadly. ;Took yeh from the ruined house myself, on Dumbledore#39;s orders. Load of old tosh,; said Uncle Vernon. Harry jumped; he had almost forgotten that the Dursleys were there.;骗人的玩艺。 Uncle Vernon certainly seemed to have got back his courage. He was glaring at Hagrid and his fists were clenched. ;Now, you listen here, boy,; he snarled, ;I accept there#39;s something strange about you, probably nothing a good beating wouldn#39;t have cured ; and as for all this about your parents, well, they were weirdoes, no denying it, and the world#39;s better off without them in my opinion ; asked for all they got, getting mixed up with these wizarding types ; just what I expected, always knew they#39;d come to a sticky end;;;听着,;他开口了,;我承认你的确有些与众不同,就算揍你一顿也改变不了。 But at that moment, Hagrid leapt from the sofa and drew a battered pink umbrella from inside his coat. Pointing this at Uncle Vernon like a sword, he said, ;I#39;m warning you, Dursley ; I#39;m warning you ; one more word;;In danger of being speared on the end of an umbrella by a bearded giant, Uncle Vernon#39;s courage failed again; he flattened himself against the wall and fell silent. ;That#39;s better,; said Hagrid, breathing heavily and sitting back down on the sofa, which this time sagged right down to the floor.;这样最好。 Harry, meanwhile, still had questions to ask, hundreds of them. ;But what happened to Vol-, sorry ; I mean, You-Know-Who?;;最后,我想问,#39;神秘人#39;到底怎么样了?;;Good question, Harry. Disappeared. Vanished. Same night he tried ter kill you. Makes yeh even more famous. That#39;s the biggest myst#39;ry, see; he was gettin#39; more an#39; more powerful ; why#39;d he go?;Some say he died. Codswallop, in my opinion. Dunno if he had enough human left in him to die. Some say he#39;s still out there, bidin#39; his time, like, but I don#39; believe it. People who was on his side came back ter ours. Some of lsquo;em came outta kinda trances. Donrsquo; reckon they could#39;ve done if he was comin#39; back.;问得好,哈利。 ;Most of us reckon he#39;s still out there somewhere but lost his powers. Too weak to carry on. lsquo;Cause somethin#39; about you finished him, Harry. There was somethin#39; goin#39; on that night he hadn#39;t counted on ; I dunno what it was, no one does ; but somethin#39; about you stumped him, all right.;他们中的许多人还做了不少好事。 ;Mr White said again,#39;Think,woman!Think!Our boy was in the machinery for a long time. They didn#39;t want to show him to us! Think! Do you want to see his body?#39;怀特先生劝她,;好好想一想,老太太,我们的孩子在机器里呆了那么长时间,人家都不让我们看,你真的想看我们孩子的尸体?;#39;Yes! He#39;s my son. I#39;m not afraid of him!#39; she answered.;是的,他是我儿子,我不害怕。 #39;You don#39;t understand,#39; Mr White said sadly, but he went downstairs to look for the monkey#39;s paw.;你真不可理喻。 In the living-room it was dark and Mr White did not have a candle. Slowly, he went across the room and he put out his hand for the monkey#39;s paw.He touched it, and quickly took his hand away again. #39;No!#39; he thought.#39;I can#39;t! I don#39;t want to see Herbert! His face;after he was in the machinery... no!#39;;不,我不能,我不想看到赫伯特被机器轧烂的脸。 Then he thought about his wife;and he put out his hand and took the paw. In the bedroom his wife waited. She saw the paw in Mr White#39;s hand and cried, #39;Quick! Make the wish!#39;卧室里,妻子在等他。一看到怀特先生手里的猴爪她就叫起来,;快,快许愿!;#39;I can#39;t,#39; Mr White answered.#39;Remember;he died in the machinery!#39;;我不能,;怀特先生答道,;记住,他是死在机器里!;#39;Make the wish! I#39;m not afraid of my own son!#39; Mrs White cried again.;许愿吧! Mr White looked sadly at his wife, but he took the paw in his right hand and said slowly, ;I wish for my son, Herbert, to come back to us.; then he sat down in the nearest chair. But Mrs White went over to the window and looked out into the road. She stayed there for a long time and she did not move.Nothing happened. The monkey#39;s paw could not do it! 但什么也没发生,猴爪并不起作用!#39;Thank God!#39;Mr White said, and he went back to bed.;感谢上帝!;怀特先生说着又睡觉去了。Soon Mrs White went to bed too. Article/201204/176623

Obesity is a problem that is getting bigger and bigger around the world. It really hits rich countries. When people have money, they buy a lot of the wrong food. They become lazy and eat fast food. They also forget about exercise and sit in front of the TV instead. The worrying thing is that more and more children are suffering from obesity. This is a big problem. The number of overweight kids I see today is amazing. I think the reason is quite simple – junk food, games and the Internet. When I was growing up, I had a balanced diet. I also spent most of my free time outdoors. I spent hours every day on my bike or playing football. Kids today hardly go outside. They are glued to one kind of screen or another – TV, computer or games console. Article/201106/141338

Our nose is the strangest of all body parts. It’s such a funny thing. And where is it? Right on the front of our face. Right in the middle. It would be OK if everyone had exactly the same nose. But we all have a different nose. Some of us have a big nose, some a small nose. Some of us have a crooked nose with big nostrils. My nose is one part of my body I’d really like to change. It’s too big for the size of my face. When people talk about why other people are beautiful or handsome, no one says, “because he or she has a nice nose,” or “oooh, his (or her) nose is just soooo sexy”. I suppose if you really don’t like your nose, you can have a nose job. Unfortunately, not all of us can afford cosmetic surgery. Article/201106/141244
