(He wrote a book called: ;Let My People Go Surfing;.) Before it was fashionable, Mr Chouinard preached a philosophy of sustainability and long-term profitability that he calls ;the slow company;. On January 3rd Patagonia was anything but slow in becoming the first firm to take advantage of a new California law designed to give businesses greater freedom to pursue strategies which they believe benefit society as a whole rather than having to concentrate on maximising profits for the next financial quarter.1月3日,巴塔哥尼亚的表现一点都不慢:它成为了第一家响应加利福尼亚州新法出台的公司。 According to Mr Chouinard, the new ;benefit corporation;—usually referred to as a B Corp—creates the legal framework for firms like his to remain true to their social goals. To qualify as a B Corp, a firm must have an explicit social or environmental mission, and a legally binding fiduciary responsibility to take into account the interests of workers, the community and the environment as well as its shareholders. It must also publish independently verified reports on its social and environmental impact alongside its financial results. Other than that, it can go about business as usual. The B Corp is a deliberate effort to change the nature of business by changing corporate law, led by B Lab, a non-profit outfit based in Pennsylvania. California is the sixth state to allow B Corps; the first was Maryland, in April加利福尼亚州是全美第六个认可互益性企业的州;第一个是马里兰州(2010年4月)。Patagonia was followed immediately by another 11 Californian firms, including Give Something Back Office Supplies, Green Retirement Plans and DopeHut, a clothing retailer. Across America, there are now several hundred B Corps. Before Patagonia, the best-known was probably Seventh Generation, a maker of green detergents, paper towels and other household products. Californias B Corp legislation took effect alongside a new law creating the ;flexible purpose company; (FlexC), which allows a firm to adopt a specific social or environmental goal, rather than the broader obligations of a B Corp. Another option in America is the low-profit limited-liability (LC3) company, which can raise money for socially beneficial purposes while making little or no profit. The idea of a legal framework for firms that put profits second is not confined to America. Britain, for example, has since 2005 allowed people to form ;community interest companies;. Similar laws are brewing in several European countries. The impetus for all this comes from people like Mr Chouinard, who believe that existing laws governing corporations and charities are too restrictive. For-profit firms, they argue, often face pressure to abandon social goals in favour of increasing profits. Non-profit firms and charities are needlessly restricted in their ability to raise capital when they need to grow. This prevents socially minded organisations from pursuing their goals as efficiently as possible. Existing laws for co-operatives and mutual companies are inadequate. Hence the need for B Corps and other novel structures, goes the argument. There is no tax advantage to being a B Corp, but there is to some of the new legal structures. Whether these new legal forms will change business that much remains to be seen. Supporters of existing corporate law say it does not prevent firms, if they so wish, from setting social and environmental goals or rigorously reporting on their performance in delivering them—and that pursuing profit is often the best way to benefit society. Nor is it clear how much difference in practice will be made by the obligation of a B Corp to weigh interests other than profits. How does one measure such things? What counts for more: a clean lake or a happy neighbour? Mr Chouinard argues that making a firms social mission explicit in its legal structure makes it harder for a new boss or owner to abandon it. Perhaps so. B Corps will be tested in the market. Anyone who feels inspired by a B Corps mission is free to invest in its shares, or work for it. Science and Technology ornography and politics Rising to the occasion科技 色情与政治 应付自如Electoral victory brings a surprising consequence: the winners look at smut选举的胜利带来一个让人惊奇的结果:获胜的一方寻淫觅秽Im pretty sure I didnt vote for that! WHEN Barack Obama won the American presidency in 2008 his supporters cheered, cried, hugged—and in many cases logged on to their computers to look at pornography. And, lest Republicans crow about the decadence of their opponents, precisely the obverse happened when their man won in 2004.2008年,当巴拉克·奥巴马赢得美国总统大选时,他的持者们欢呼雀跃、泪流满面、并相互拥抱——而在多数情形下,他们登陆电脑查看色情信息。 That, at least, is the conclusion of a study by Patrick Markey of Villanova University, in Pennsylvania, and his wife Charlotte, who works at Rutgers, in New Jersey. The Markeys were looking for confirmation of a phenomenon called the challenge hypothesis. This suggests that males involved in a competition will experience a rise in testosterone levels if they win, and a fall if they lose. The challenge hypothesis was first advanced to explain the mating behaviour of monogamous birds. In these species, males testosterone levels increase in the spring, to promote aggression against potential rivals. When the time comes for the males to settle down and help tend their young, their testosterone falls, along with their aggressive tendencies. Something similar has since been found to apply to fish, lizards,ring-tailed lemurs, rhesus monkeys, chimpanzees—and humans. In many of these animals, though, there is a twist. It is not just that testosterone ramps up for breeding and ramps down for nurturing. Rather, its production is sensitive to a males success in the breeding competition itself. In men, then, levels of the hormone rise in preparation for a challenge and go up even more if that challenge is successfully completed. Failure, by contrast, causes the level to fall. Previous research has found these hormonal ups and downs in male wrestlers, martial artists, tennis players, chess players and even people playing a coin-flip game. In evolutionary terms, it makes sense. If a losing male continues to be aggressive, the chances are he will be seriously injured (it is unlikely natural selection could have foreseen competitive coin-tossing). Turning down his testosterone level helps ward off that risk. Conversely, the winner can afford to get really dominant, as the threat of retaliation has receded. For most species, determining that this actually happens requires a lot of boring fieldwork. But the Markeys realised that in the case of people they could cut the tedium by asking what was going on in those parts of the web that provide a lot more traffic than their users will ever admit to, on the assumption that men fired up by testosterone have a greater appetite for pornography than those who are not. To do this they first used a web service called WordTracker to identify the top ten search terms employed by people seeking pornography (;xs; was the politest among them). Then they asked a second service, Google Trends, to analyse how often those words were used in the week before and the week after an American election, broken down by state. Their results, just published in /Evolution and Human Behavior/, were the same for all three of the elections they looked at—the 2004 and 2008 presidential contests, and the 2006 mid-terms (in which the Democrats made big gains in both houses of Congress). No matter which side won, searches for porn increased in states that had voted for the winners anddecreased in those that had voted for the losers. The difference was not huge; it was a matter of one or two per cent. But it was consistent and statistically significant. If the polls are right, then, next Tuesdays mid-term elections will see red faces in the red states for those furtive surfers who are caught in the act. In the blue states, meanwhile, a fit of the blues will mean the screens stay switched off. /201301/222616Business.商业。Business ethics. Going bananas. Chiquita has tried hard to be good—and got no credit for it. SOMETIMES you bend over backwards to please, but still get nowhere. That is what appears to have happened to Chiquita Brands, an American firm which is one of the worlds biggest suppliers of bananas and other fruit. Despite accommodating eco-warriors, social activists and unions, it has found little reward. After a campaign by a green group called ForestEthics, Chiquita agree d in November to avoid fuel from Canadian tar sands. In recent years, however, the firm has made huge efforts to promote social responsibility and sustainability, working with activist groups such as the Rainforest Alliance. ;We can do good and do well at the same time,; Fernando Aguirre, the firms chief executive, wrote in the companys latest social responsibility report, issued in 2008. Chiquita has signed and largely upheld a global agreement with local and international food unions. It has embraced sustainable farming techniques and allows products to be certified for environmental and other standards. Last year it promised to promote more women and to ensure there is no sexual harassment on the plantations it owns and buys from. But that has not provided protection from big retailers buying bananas direct from plantations and bypassing Chiquita and its main rivals, Dole and Fresh Del Monte Produce. Many firms in conflict zones face extortion. In 2003 Chiquita became the only American company voluntarily to admit to the Department of Justice that it had paid protection money to Colombian paramilitary forces surrounding its plantations. Now it is facing a raft of American and Colombian lawsuits. Chiquitas conspicuous lack of reward is beginning to worry some veteran campaigners. Neither Dole nor Del Monte has been interested in following Chiquita in signing a global union agreement, says Ron Oswald, head of IUF, the international foodworkers union.;Its not sustainable for any company in a competitive sector to make progress and gain no recognition for it,; he grumbles.

The Japanese car maker announces a global recall of it Prius and Corolla models from certain years. Alex Zolbert reports. Another recall from Toyota, the second one in as many months. It is about 2.8 million vehicles being recalled this time, about 1.5 million here in Japan, more than 650,000 in the US and the remainder of those in Europe. Were still getting details on this. It involves the second generation Prius as well as several different Corolla models. According to Toyota, the problem is with the extension shafts in the steering. They also want to take a look at water pumps in some of the hybrid vehicles. And again, the second recall in as many months, just in October, we had a recall of more than 7 million vehicles. And then if you go back to and 2010, there was a massive recall, more than 8 million vehicles involved in acceleration problems, a very serious problem for Toyota vehicle. So when you added all up going back to , this puts the number, take a listen, its quite staggering: more than 18 million vehicles recalled by Toyota going back to . And Pauline, this doesnt even take into account things like the rising yen, the strong yen that has been hitting Toyota hard as well as the tsunami that hit Toyota hard in March of 2011 in a month that followed another course in the floods in Thailand last year, around this time last year that also hit Toyota. So the company simply cannot catch a break and keep in mind as a car manufacturer, you only get one reputation and this is not doing good things for Toyotas right now. Pauline. Yeah. They are juggling so many challenges right now. And Alex, on the political front, lets talk about politics in Japan. We are hearing that negotiations are in the final stages for Prime Minister Noda to call an election pretty soon. What do you know about this? Yeah, Pauline, this is the other big story that weve been watching all week. Things have been really wrapping up between Prime Minister Noda and the opposition party, the opposition party saying that hes promised to call an election soon. Noda said that he would do it on his own timetable. Late tonight, this is where things stand. Prime Minister is saying that if the opposition LDP Party is willing to make a few more concessions, then he says that he will likely dissolve parliament perhaps by the end of this week. That move will clear the way for the election commission and then set a day for a much anticipated elections. There are several days being thrown around for that again if this all goes according to plan. The date that most people are saying is December 16, but it could move a few days on either Saturday. That is the big story that we continue to watch through tonight and through the rest of the week.

Before I start telling you about this all new 2012 Subaru presenters, one thing I want to make it kind of bugs me about Subarus, is Subaru honors, really some of them, they can be a little touchy. During this review, I may criticize certain aspects of this or other Subaru products, no insult is intended to you or to any member of your immediate family, please hear out. Great, now we have a little talk. Now let’s take a look at this car, the first thing you’ll notice about it is it’s a huge step forward for Subaru in terms of design, and that’s actually not bad looking, sorry, but exterior design has not been a real strong point of the Subaru over the years, if you know what I mean, but this one actually looks kind of sharp. This particular car, by the way, is Subaru Impreza wagon, get it as sedan too. Driving this car is really where it all comes together, steering I could feel to it, even the brakes feel good, and the car handles pretty well. This car has what experts call the continuously variable transmission, means it doesn’t have saparate gears like you know, first, second, third like that, instead it actually varies the gear ratios continuously as you’re driving, so, well, theoretically at least, you should always be in the optimal gear ratio for maximum efficiency, all in all, you can say it’s a lot more fun to drive the mighty thing from looking at a compact wagon from the outside. You know, one problem I’ve had with Subaru cars in the past is, I felt like some of them have relied too much on the all-wheel drive to make them competitive, if I will drive cars, it’d be ok. In this case, this is a car that even if with just front wheel drive, simply be a pretty darn good car. The fact is it’s all wheel drive, for a lot of people is gonna put it over the top. I like that.
