I have just been to Buckingham Palace, where Her Majesty The Queen has asked me to form a new government, and I accepted. In David Cameron, I follow in the footsteps of a great, modern Prime Minister. Under Davids leadership, the government stabilised the economy, reduced the budget deficit, and helped more people into work than ever before. But Davids true legacy is not about the economy but about social justice. From the introduction of same-sex marriage, to taking people on low wages out of income tax altogether; David Cameron has led a one-nation government, and it is in that spirit that I also plan to lead. Because not everybody knows this, but the full title of my party is the Conservative and Unionist Party, and that word ‘unionist is very important to me. It means we believe in the Union: the precious, precious bond between England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland. But it means something else that is just as important; it means we believe in a union not just between the nations of the ed Kingdom but between all of our citizens, every one of us, whoever we are and wherever were from. That means fighting against the burning injustice that, if youre born poor, you will die on average 9 years earlier than others. If youre black, youre treated more harshly by the criminal justice system than if youre white. If youre a white, working-class boy, youre less likely than anybody else in Britain to go to university. If youre at a state school, youre less likely to reach the top professions than if youre educated privately. If youre a woman, you will earn less than a man. If you suffer from mental health problems, theres not enough help to hand. If youre young, youll find it harder than ever before to own your own home. But the mission to make Britain a country that works for everyone means more than fighting these injustices. If youre from an ordinary working class family, life is much harder than many people in Westminster realise. You have a job but you dont always have job security. You have your own home, but you worry about paying a mortgage. You can just about manage, but you worry about the cost of living and getting your kids into a good school. If youre one of those families, if youre just managing, I want to address you directly. I know youre working around the clock, I know youre doing your best, and I know that sometimes life can be a struggle. The government I lead will be driven not by the interests of the privileged few, but by yours. We will do everything we can to give you more control over your lives. When we take the big calls, well think not of the powerful, but you. When we pass new laws, well listen not to the mighty but to you. When it comes to taxes, well prioritise not the wealthy, but you. When it comes to opportunity, we wont entrench the advantages of the fortunate few. We will do everything we can to help anybody, whatever your background, to go as far as your talents will take you. We are living through an important moment in our countrys history. Following the referendum, we face a time of great national change. And I know because were Great Britain, that we will rise to the challenge. As we leave the European Union, we will forge a bold new positive role for ourselves in the world, and we will make Britain a country that works not for a privileged few, but for every one of us. That will be the mission of the government I lead, and together we will build a better Britain.201608/457571。

今天李华会学到两个常用语:flip flop和wishy-washy.LL: Hey, Li Hua who do you support for class president?LH: 我觉得Gary Lawrence当学生会主席应该是不错的。 LL: Gary Lawrence? But he flip-flops all of the time. One minute he's in favor of increasing campus security and the next minute he's accusing the university of policing its studentsLH: Flip-flop? 嗯...flip-flop, 你是说他翻来覆去的意思吧?LL: Something like that. Flip-flop is a term that is often used in politics. It means that a particular person suddenly changes his/her position on an issue.LH: 噢,flip-flop经常用在政治方面。 每个人都会有改变主意的时候嘛!LL: That's true, but when someone flip-flops a lot it makes him seem weak and indecisive. People will not think he is a good, strong leader.LH: LL: If Gary flip-flops a lot, how could he be a good student leader!LH: I would feel as though I had voted for the wrong person.LH: 这样算不算是flip-flop?LL: That would definitely be flip-flopping.LH: 可是一些政治人物经常这样改变立场的啊!LL: That's true, but they also lose support when they do things like that. It's very negative to be accused of flip-flopping in U.S. politics.LH: 还好我不是什么政治人物,这样我就可以随便改变立场咯!******LL: Li Hua, what about Laura Wilson? Do you support her for class president even though she flip-flops all of the time? I think she is so wishy-washy.LH: 嗯,Laura Wilson是还好啦。 那又是什么意思啊?LL: Wishy-washy is similar to flip-flop but it's an adjective instead of a verb. To be wishy-washy is to be weak and indecisive.LH: I can also call you wishy-washy if you can't decide which candidate to support.LH: 嘿! 我只是要仔细地想一想,到底把票投给谁最好!LL: I know, I'm just teasing you. Can you give me another example of wishy-washy?LH: 就是标准的wishy-washy.LL: Yes, you could call her wishy-washy because she can't make a decision and act on it.LH: 说到做决定,我还没有决定是不是该为下学期的一个会议写报告。 LL: Quit being wishy-washy and make a decision. If it's worth it, then it's worth it. If not, then forget about it.LH: LL: Sometimes, you have to take the risk.

例如,你的同事对你说: 例句-1:"I never know whether my boss likes my work or not -- he is a real poker face!" 下面这个人说的也是同样的情况: 例句-2:"I tried to keep a poker face even though I was scared to death when I went back to my doctor to hear the results of my lab tests. But I admit I gave him the biggest smile of my life when he told me the tests were negative and there was nothing wrong with me.” 这在英文里就是 close to the vest。 我们先来听听一位记者的讲话: 例句-3:"Two other governors have aly announced that they will run for president in the next election but the governor of our state is still keeping his plans close to his vest -- nobody is sure what he will do." 下面一个例子是一个大公司的总裁在告诉一位同事一个机密的消息,但是要他不要说出去: 例句-4:"John, keep this close to your vest but I want to tell you our company is going to merge with a big New York Corporation -- they'll announce it sometime next week."

L: 今天天气真好,你看那个人在跟他的玩,那小白真好玩!M: Yes, he is a cute little critter.L: Critter是什么?Critter是的一个品种吗?M: No, a critter is just an animal, usually one that is relatively small and furry. The word is used a lot in the Southern part of the US.L: 噢,critter就是毛耸耸的小动物。 But you know a lot of people don't like squirrels. They think that they are dirty and look like rats with bushy tails.L: 哎哟,那样子真好玩!M: Well, I would not try to feed those little critters if I were you, they bite and can carry diseases.L: 不要喂它们吃东西? Michael, 那象耗子那样的小动物也能够叫做critters吗?M: Yes, those are critters, too. Speaking of which, did you hear that my roommate got a new-born sharpei?L: M: I don't think so. As far as I'm concerned, that little critter looks ugly.L: Michael, 你带我去看一看,好不好吗?M: You want to take a look at that ugly critter? Ok, we'll go.******M: Look, Li Hua, here is my roommate's sharpei. Look at that furry mug. He looks like he should be friendly.L: 沙皮和mug有什么关系呀?M: No, not a coffee mug. Mug is slang for a face, usually an ugly one. His little mug is his face.L: Michael, 我能不能摸摸它啊?M: Go ahead, but I'm sure he'll bite you.L: 它会咬我? For example, my brother has a really ugly mug.L: 再说,你弟弟的脸没准跟你的脸很象啊!M: I was just trying to give you an example. I don't really think my brother has an ugly face.L: 对了,我还得弄弄清楚,mug一般是指难看的脸,是贬意,对不对?M: Yeah, we usually don't say a person has a pretty mug. But, if you like the look of that dog, you can say: "Oh, what a cute mug this little dog has!"L: M: That's right. /200602/3152。
